Pie-bald deer seen at Cascade River State Park
Posted on March 18, 2011 by Sam Cook

Paul Sundberg of Grand Marais made this photo of a pie-bald deer alongside another deer on Tuesday at Cascade River State Park near Lutsen. (Paul Sundberg photo)

Paul Sundberg sent along this photo me made of a pie-bald deer at Cascade River State Park near Lutsen. He shot the photo on Tuesday. The deer seems to be staying in the park, he said.

“People have seen it every day this week in the campground,” Sundberg said. “It seems to hang around the campground from morning to mid-afternoon.”

Pie-bald coloration on a deer, simply a patchy combination of the normal deer hair color and white hair, is a color phase, not a partial albino, said Martha Minchak, Department of Natural Resources assistant area wildlife manager in Duluth.

“It’s like a black bear and a cinnamon bear (color phases),” she said.

Sundberg is a professional photographer who has done lots of work with wildlife.

They are neat. Every one is a bit different. I have this pie buck to mount tanned and in the freezer to mount. I purchased it a year or so ago. One day when I get the chance anyway.
