Just would like to get everyones opinion on smoking in or around the deer stand. A few buddies  of mine smoke n we sometimes hunt each others stands jst for a little change of scenery. Now he smokes in his stand constantly  and is always killing deer. But i know some people
who would have a fit if they saw someone smoking near or in their stands. Just looking for a few opinions.

just about everyone in my deer camp smokes except me and 2 cousins. they all do it in there deer stands. its a whole different ball game when your rifle hunting because the deer arent up close and personal and the bucks are so rut crazed they dont care about anything other than that doe infront of him. me and a buddy were hunting the family farm and he was smoking in his stand and i was probably 150 yards away and i could smell it so you know the deer could. so its really up in the air.

I assume the deer can smell you so a little smoke may actually help.

I've done it and still do. I see plenty of deer while on stand, but.... I have no clue of how many I DON'T see because of it.

Ive got a great uncle who smokes on his stand and seems to get a deer every year as well, or is atleast seeing them.  He swears by it, and says that they dont associate it with human odor, or an odor that is to fear and he thinks it actually attracts and calms them.

I dont smoke, so I have never witnessed it hunting, but I couldnt see how it could help any.  But hey.... what do I know.   :coffee:

I smoke while bow-hunting and just last Sat. had a spike buck come in from downwind about 5 minutes after I put one out.  Where I hunt, a lot of people heat with wood and I've even descented my clothes by standing in the smoke from a campfire.  Smoke is a natural and common scent for deer.  Either from people or forest fires.  Granted, cancer-sticks have a much different smell than wood smoke.  I'd rather be relaxed in my stand after a cig than get the twitchys from not having my nicotene fix.

I guess that pretty much puts the smoking gun to bed.  Most will agree it simply had little effect on the out come of the hunt.  That is unless you have your lighter in your hand instead of your gun when that buck runs by.  :rotflmao:

Can smocking hurt your hunt ( yes) can smocking  :help: your hunt (yes) smock can tell deer there danger of fire and smock will all so tell the deer there people there. But smock can all so tell you where the wind coming from even if it lite wind hold a cig up even if you do not smock it, I do this the first thing in the morning and that tell me where I want to sit, then I head in I get in the stand and do the same thing I now know where the deer are going to bust me.

Two year ago I had two does walking out of the swamp and right to me then they turn right they was now walking right to my busted zone just as she hit that spot here head with up "began" dead deer I sit 5 min did a doe in heat call the buck came right out and right to me, he came with the wind "Bang" buck dead,

Now if I did not know my busted zone was that dose would have busted me and run off but at the same time tell every deer around I was there,

I can not tell you how many times I have done this,

How many of you pee out of your stand?
Maybe this should be a new thread.

Ive peed by my stand when I was walking out and I killed 2 deer that morning.  I must have some attractant.  I should bottle it and sell it.....

Back some year when I bow hunted I was have a smock and pee out of my stand and a 8 point buck walk out 30 yards and walk right to the corn talking about caught with your pants down. :banghead:

Now most of my stand have 1 gal jugs in then and the one that do not I just go.

I shot one buck and three does this bow season.

All deer shot I was watching a movie with head phones on my smart phone, and in a ground stand with a boddy heater going. I had my 4 wheeler next to my stand and I did use a tree 10 yards away a few times for number one and two!

One deer was 53 yards, one was 12 yards and the other was 17 yards from the stand

I think if your loud or making to much noise, they will not come around. If your hunting a spot that no one goes to or no 4 wheelers go it will keep deer away. But if you use your 4 wheelers and walk the woods you hunt all year round. it's just another day for the deer.

I do not smoke but my friend does. We have hunted the last 10 years togather and he has never shot a deer with a bow.
It's not because he smokes it because he can not stand still and he is moving and making noise.

I shot more deer when I used to smoke.
Never thought about it till now.
Now days the night before opener we sit by the camp fire eating chili and drinking cheap beer. I doubt that has anything to do with lack of deer sightings though.

Not directly but maybe a lot of deer get by the next day while you are sitting on a log doing your thing while holding your head in your hands.  :rotflmao:

Maybe not so much the "smoke" but more the action required to smoke.  Reaching in pockets for smokes and lighter, striking match or lighter, more rustling putting pack and fire away, arm going up and down while smoking and finally throwing the butt away.  Lots of movement there.  :campfire:

Deer smell smoke all  the time in the air. If they  ran off ebery time they smelled smoke they would never stop running.  The natives used smoke as a cover sent back in the day. I did shoot a spike buck a few years back and was smoking at the time so I had to deal with that first.

my great uncle smokes on stand alot, uses a old tin coffee cup and thermos, i can hear him clanking them together, i can smell his smoke and hear him coughing from all the way across the woods, but he gets a deer every single year. i know numerous people that have shot deer while they where having a smoke. dont really seem to bother them.

I smoke and I most of the time get a deer In the last 6 year I have take 15 deer or so, a 11 pointer 10 pointer 3 8 pointer 2 6 pointer and spike and some doe's

I fine smoking can give you a edge you fine your self look at the number one thing (wind) you fine setting your stand in what I call the best place to where the wind is coming from where you will be less liken to bust your hunt,

See the first thing I do at the house as i step out side is light up and hold in up this tell me what stand to set up in, have the smoke go to a house or maybe a road, or maybe land you can't not shot on, can and will make your hunt a good one,

When in the stand yes you try to not to smoke, but you know where that deer will pick you out so you make your shot count before it get there,

it all can hurt your hunt as some time the wind change,

It's all in the wind!!!   :whistling: :whistling:
