killing deerflies

I HATE deerflies!!!!!   Here is what I did today while spraying the trees.  I strapped a few solo cups to my hat and attached i window fly strip to each cup.  After an hour I didn't think the flies where to bad until I took off my hat and had a look at my catch.  I would see a fly as it zipped passed my face and that would be it .  I didn't get bit one time and I didn't use any bug spray.  Purple was the winner.

Now thats funny right there,should've posted a pic of you wearing the hat...LOL,wonder what the neighbors thought when they seen ya walking around with that hat on...On a side note,got a friend that marketed something similar,called the "fly catcher" no plastic cups but a piece of smelly fly attractant that sticks to your hat,works great on hot summer days horse back riding and lawn mowing.

Those red solo cups are a whole lot more useful standing up and full of beer.

Yes there is a pic that my wife snapped but I am not willing to face the humiliation,  plus its on her cell phone and I don't know how to get the pic from the phone to the computer.

As far as I know they are scent free. 

I also had the hat on at the beach.  kids pretended like they didn't know me until they started getting bit by the flies.  then they wanted to wear the hat.

I didn't come up with the idea.  stole it off of the internet.

   I will be getting some of those strips.  I am going to try to find a way to get it work for the ankle biters as well.  Maybe line the spots they like to hide right before they shoot in and bite or some kind of ankle strap.    You got me thinking.

How about putting a hole in the end of the cup and hanging them with mono under your seats.

   Heading up to Rainy Lake in a week.  I will be giving it a try.  I will bring extras just in case it works and the flies are bad.  Field rates will apply at that point.

  Where did you pick up the window strips at?  I could not find them at Fleet Farm or OK Hardware.

The other day I had an local old timer tell me to spray myself with mouth wash instead of bug spray. At first I thought he was full of it but was so sick of the Deerflies that I gave it a try and to my surprise it keep them away! Will try it again next time to see if it was a fluke or if it really works. I'll let you all know!

Did you put it in a spray bottle or just tubed it on you?

Put it in a spray bottle. And didn't notice any of them either.

What kind of mouthwash did you use? I have heard of this before but never tried it. I have been using a fly repellent that comes in a can like a salve that you can buy at Gander but I am not all that convince that something else would be better.. Wonder if it would work on horses? how long did it last?

I was mowing the yard this afternoon and getting hit 5 or 6 times every pass. I came in and put on some Listerine- about 2 or 3 tablespoon- and went back out. The few deer flies that did lamd did a quick touch and go. I wondered if I just moved out of range so when I was done I went back to the tree line and was swarmed by them. Only had a few touch and go's.   

A side benefit is the bites I did have were relieved by the Listerine.

I just used some cheap brand and was orange flavored but don't think that part matters. I am starting to think the old man knew what he was talking about!
