Anatomy of a spinner bait.

    This is a thread about what goes into making a spinner bait.  I will post the various steps.  The reason I am doing this is so you can look at your potential purchases with a critical eye.  You will know what to look for to see if you are getting a quality product.  The first component will be the hook.  You will want to check the size and type of hook.  You will want a very strong hook on these.  The other thing is the diameter of the wire.  A thinner wire can give off more vibration but will not hold up well to multiple fish.  I prefer the .35 to .40 diameter wires for action as well as durability.

   The next step is to cast the spinner body in lead.  Many different head styles and weights are available.  The particular head in the picture is called an Ultra minnow.  The cavity being used is a 1/2 oz.    Once the casting is done the sprue and any flash around the casting is removed.  The next step will be painting.

   Next step is painting.  Start out with a white base coat.  After that it is up to your imagination.  In this example I decided to paint the blades as well. Looking to do a firetiger sunfish type spinner bait. I painted one side of each blade and left the other chrome for flash.  These are the steps.

   1. White base coat
   2. Yellow
   3. Green chart.
   4. Orange
   5. Kill spot and eyes 
   6. Epoxy top coat                                Ready for assembly.   1/3rd of process done.

     This particular bait is unique in that it has eyes on the blades.  The two blades are the same size.  One convex side is painted as well as one concave side.  I will be having a drawing at the end of this thread.  Sign up here for a chance to field test this lure. DDS can ya make any willow blades white with a little blue in them? My favorite pattern for fall northerns is white and blue skirts with a little chartreuse.  Big white or chartreuse trailers finish them off.

   If you can imagine it I'm pretty sure I can get pretty close to what you are looking for.  I have some pretty cool trailers too.  I have not painted blades with vinyl paints before so the winner will have to let me know how it holds up.  Powder painting holds up very well and does not need an epoxy top coat.  Good luck guys the finished bait should be posted tomorrow.

  Wildlife,  I have to wait to hear from the winner whether this bait even swims straight.  Right now it is only speculation as to what it will look like in the water.  If the feedback is good I will make a bunch more and you will be the first to get one.

  Here is the finished bait.  I still can't really get a good  .  One other thing to judge the quality of a spinner bait is the swivel on the top blade.  A ball bearing swivel for the top blade is much better than the typical crane swivel.   I am including a spare skirt because I am hoping this bait gets pounded.  If the winner can locate a school of bass feeding on sunfish this bait should get you some action.     Good luck there is still time to enter

Of course if I was the one to be selected to field test the new spinnerbait there would be a very good chance that live video    would be available to see actual fish caught on the prototype.    Just saying

  I am thinking I will make a few more of these.  I would like to see it in action myself.  What I think I will do is send the original prototype to the winner and then make another set for everyone else that signed up to this point.  It will take me a week to complete them.   There will be one for Wildlife too.

Well guys the spinner bait arrived just a minute ago and it was like Christmas, It was just what I had asked for! Well built lure with an extra shirt included. Nice job DDS as soon as it stops blowing up here it will hit the water and we will see if catches fish!
