Dear MNO Sportsmen and women. Question.

I am constantly surprised when I lose fish while trolling. Whether pike or walleyes. I think I could be doing better.

Tuesday night trolling for walleyes I probably lost 4 good fish. I'm using 15lb. PowerPro. Wondering if I am better off with mono for trolling? Also wondering if I need to set the hook harder. What do you guys do and what line do you prefer?

Thanks.

in my opinion, maybe need a stiffer rod. i have rods for walleyes for jigging and lindy rigs. for trolling and for those toothy critters i use a sturdier rod with the black braided line.

With the braid, u shouldn't have to set the hook.  Sounds like same set up as me but I also have trolling rods like Glenn57 said.  Short bitn eyes will sometime come up and hit the crank and get snagged in the top of their heads.  Are they biting u off?  Or just coming off??

Rods a medium heavy. 2 of the fish I caught, hook came out in the net (one was a muskie). I did have my line break on a fish also - that was the braid - did not appear to be the knot. That surprised me.

What a drag.  Lighten it up.   ;)    I like to be able to easily pull it out by hand without any effort.  Let those fish finish their tackle before having their lips ripped off. :rotflmao:  Think of it as a rope tow.  You have to grab them lightly because there is no give.  A t-bar has some spring before it gently moves you in the right direction.

same rods i use. sometimes the knot can go. i make it a practice on occasion to cut off 2-4 ft of line and retie. remember fishin line is like a chain or cable..............its only as strong as its weakest spot.

PS...................maybe DDS needs to give ya heavier dental floss!!!!!!!  :whistling: :whistling: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Berkley fire line........enough said there.

In regards to setting the hook.....pulling cranks is about all I do for walleyes and I never set the hook, they hook themselves.

Any way back to Line.  I'm also thinking of trying that new Berkley Nanofil or what ever it's called.  Little spendy but maybe worth a try.

I only fish for panfish in the winter and then I use Fireline Crystal Ice I believe it's called and usually buy it in 2lb test.

I usually only fish for Walleyes in the summer.  Unless I'm fishing with Brad or Doug then I have a backlash master spooled up with some 30lb Suffix 832.  I bought that line because it was on sale at the time.  So far so good i can't remember one time it didn't do the job.  Besides Bass and Northern aren't worth the money to spend on high quality equipment in my book.

What in the wide world of sport kind of a comment is that?

OK back to my inquiry. I don't typically set the hook either fishing like that. By the way we were trolling at about 3 mph. What do you guys think about the DDS plan of setting the drag fairly light? Seems counterintuitive to me.

Glen57 - usually when the knot fails I can tell. Seemed like a weird random break.

fawk......................maybe he cant catch bass or nords!!!!!!!!!! :fishing: :fishing2: sounds to me like you had a case of a weak spot in the line, could of been kinked or weakened by getting a door slammed on it or something to that extent.

in regards to setting the hook trolling............ i generally agree they hook themselves but i usually set the hook anyway. that normal reaction of drinking some of that beer when the fish strikes automaticcly make one jerk the rod back. :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

I think this is a classic case of Fawkinnae overthinking something. We all have off nights.

I have yet to witness one of these off nights by the great FawkLinder.  It has to be the equipment somewhere.

Amazing - a little know secret. Truth is I had to change my name from FawkLinder to avoid confusing me with Al.

I have two trolling rods that are 8 foot long medium action and they are both spooled with fireline so that I can line them up with the precision trolling book and I have not had a problem with the fireline at all.  I don't set the hook but I do have the drag set fairly loose but not so loose that It pulls out too easy I just want a little give when they hit the rap since the fire line has no stretch ecpecialy if I am trolling at faster speeds say over two and a half mph
