Lake's Oahe/Sharpe Pierre area fishing report for June 19th thru June 23rd, 2013

Fishing on both Oahe and Lake Sharpe is excellent with almost all anglers getting limits of walleye with both bass and northern pike as either limits or bonus fish. The size of the walleye being caught on Oahe can be on the small side in many area's and some days many anglers are coming in with more of the under 15 inch fish due to the numbers of these year class fish in the lake. The extra bonus fish have made the lake the busiest I have ever seen in my 30 year's on the lake. Boat ramps and fish cleaning places are very busy. One tip. A self contained 12 volt fish cleaning knife like Berkley's NiCad battery knife is a time saving investment as most cleaning places are limited on power outlets so waiting in line for a plug in can be time consuming. I guided the Bird group out of the Outpost lodge to limits of small walleye and some big ones on Oahe and then limits of walleye and bass on Lake Sharpe. They had one bass around 18 1/2 inch's for there big fish. I then took the Jay Wright group out of Nebraska for two days on Sharpe and one day on Oahe. A great bunch of guys that have made many trips over the years with me. Once again they got a real big smallmouth bass at 19 3/4 inch's getting a proud angler award from the state. This is a very good year for big smallmouth on Sharpe and a nice avg. size walleye. Oahe remains challenging for numbers of over 15 inch fish however the 8 fish limits seem to keep most angler happy as catching a lot of fish is very common and most groups are getting some big fish also. The bite is on just about on anything you favor fishing with. My preference is bottom/bouncer crawler or Gulp pumpkinseed fry but leeches and minnows and pulling plugs are all producing fish. The bite for the most part is shallow but some bigger fish are coming deep in 30 to 45 fow. Not numbers here but better quality fish when caught.
