    • Fishing & Hunting South Dakota's Lake Oahe and Lake Sharpe
Well the weather turned cooler with 70 degree days and 2 nights of all time low temps and the fishing got a lot cooler right a long with the weather. I guided Cory Schmidt and his son to 2 days of fishing spending one day on Oahe and one day on Sharpe. We got limits on Sharpe but for the first time this year we didn't bring limits in on Oahe. The bite both places has got harder with many of the fish on Oahe going deep. We caught the fish on Oahe in around 40 fow. I am not sure if this is due to the weather or rising water levels (the lake has been coming up) but the fish have been harder to come by. Just a couple of great guys that got unlucky and hit a bad bite for one day but had a real nice day on Sharpe. On the 25th I fished the John Niedifeldt  family to limits of real nice walleye. Just a great Nebraska bunch and the kids had a ball and so did I. They were on their way to the Black Hills and got a good start to a nice vacation. I then guided the John Dryer group from Rapid City for two days to limits of nice walleye each day on Sharpe. With both groups we caught the fish on Sharpe in around 10 fow on either plugs(flicker shads) gulp or night crawlers. We had around a 17 to 18 inch avg. and for the most part managed to stay away from the bunches of boats congregated around the main community spots. With the Dryer group we had to work hard to come up with their 16 fish limits each day as the bite even on Sharpe got tougher. Some of this was caused by muddy water and some by not the right amount of current the corps was running. I also think fishing pressure has reduced numbers around Pierre. Fortunately as the fall comes more numbers of fish start to arrive from down lake so expect fishing to improve as these fish arrive in the area and the other factors stabilize. I am hoping after this unusual weather (record low temps) moves out of the area we will start to see a normal August bite. The fly's are still all over so good fly repellent in your boat is a real plus.
