Bemidji and Blackduck reports 1-9-2007

BEMIDJI - Bluewater Bait & Sports, Mark Cook, 1 mile north of the Hwy 2 & 71 Intersection, www.bluewater-bait.com (218-444-2248)
   We’ve got steady perch and walleye action on Lake Bemidji.  Perch during the day on glow devils by scenic tackle and walleyes after dark.  The northern fishing has been hot as spearing and tip-ups with big shiners and redtails are producing well.  We have redtails still.  Pike bay has got a good walleye bite going on, and for crappies hit Gilstad or Rabideau.

   The perch bite has been good on Blackduck Lake; the walleyes have been pretty good.  Try Gilstad for panfish.  Some better reports of crappies coming in on Upper Red Lake, and all good reports for the walleyes.  We have good conditions for driving on all area lakes, but still use caution.

I cant comment on specific lakes in the Bemidji area, but I can tell you that I measured big Winnie last night and in the main bowl area of the lake there was a solid 19 inches. we took a 3/4 ton diesel with a 20 foot hardside out to the middle with confidence.
the bigger lakes like red, lake of the woods and winnie are doing very well.
we had nineteen degrees below zero last night here north of Grand Rapids and it is suposed to be very cold again tonight.

the areas smaller lakes are a little bit behind the larger lakes, and the typical late freezing lakes like deer, big trout, leech have areas I would not trust with an atv yet.

leech lake had a ribbon of open water in walker bay just to the north of the town of walker two days ago.
I would have to guess that has froze over by now and they should be well on there way to good ice soon. the lower parts of walker bay like agency bay and down by shingobee island are doing quite well. the last report I heard from that area two days ago told of fourteen inches in agancy bay.
I fished in front of shingobee about the third of january and there was 11 inches so in about a week it made three inches.

most lakes up here by home, I will drive my truck out on now. the beauty is, there is no snow to speak of until you get up to red lake so I can put my gear in the van and drive to my favorite spots for cheap!
