Two local ice fishermen say they've learned their lesson after the frozen lake below them began to rapidly melt.

Lee Shear and Dave Robinette say there was still ice around the shore when they went out ice fishing on Mud Lake in McFarland Wednesday afternoon. But that wasn't the case less than six hours later.

"There was water all around us. So we had to call 911," Robinette said.

"It really melted fast," Shear said. "It disappeared faster than I've ever seen it."

McFarland and Madison Fire, as well as the Dane County Sheriff's Office responded to the call. The two men say some rescuers even went through the ice as they were bringing them in.

"It could have been a lot worse," Shear said. "If they had been a half hour later, we would have been swimming."

Authorities warn, stay off any ice on the lakes this late in the year.

UPDATED Thursday, April 3, 2014 --- 10:31 a.m.

MCFARLAND, Wis.  -- It was a close call for two fishermen who found themselves stranded on a patch of ice on a Dane County lake.

Lee Shear and Dave Robinette ventured out on the ice of Mud Lake in McFarland Wednesday afternoon. But six hours later their path to shore had melted and there was water all around them. Fortunately they had a cell phone and were able to call 911.

McFarland and Madison firefighters and Dane County sheriff's deputies responded. WMTV-TV reports some rescuers even went through the ice as they brought the men to shore. Shear says help arrived just in time. He says if it been a half hour later, he and Robinette would have been swimming.
