Leech Lake walleye fishing bite remains strong

Midge flies, lots of rain and up and down water temperatures slowed down the walleye bite but it still remains strong on Leech Lake.

Between the pesky midge flies and rainstorms, anglers had to make many adjustments to maintain an active walleye bite. The weather has been a huge factor, one day stormy and very windy, and the next day beautiful with very little wind.

As I have said many times, location, location, location is very important as anglers had to adjust moving around to different parts of the lake, and sometimes changing from day-  to early evening fishing. The water temperatures have also been up and down because of the rain, which affected fish movement.

It seems like we have moved to a summer-like pattern for a walleye bite, but  many anglers are  catching more fish on a jig and a minnow. Fatheads or rainbows, and shiners, if you can keep them alive, are the best bait presentation.

For jigging, try a 1/8 ounce green or chartreuse color, and if windy, go to 1/4 ounce. The Lindy rig with a red hook and pulling a leech or a crawler is getting a much better bite now. Slip bobbers have also been showing up for walleye fishing in the weeds during the day and on the sand flats using leeches in the evening.

Another choice anglers are going to is pull shad raps or Rapalas during early evening and late evening.

Daytime fishing has improved on the big lake on the wind-blown shorelines, points, rocks and sand flats. The key is to keep moving around, using your way points to locate a bite.

The West Goose Island Flats to the Grand Vu Flats have produced a walleye bite and, depending on the wind, try these spots: the Hardwoods, Duck Point, Ottertail Point and Submarine Island Annex area.

Evening fishing has been getting better in Walker Bay’s Cedar Point and Sand Point.

The weather this coming week looks like last week’s, with lots of rain, just average temperatures and some nice days.
