Bambi will live to see another day thanks to fire officials and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in Crookston.

Two members of the Crookston Fire Department responded to a call from police about 2:30 Wednesday about a deer that fell through ice on the Red Lake River, ABC affiliate WDAZ-TV reports.

Firefighter Chris Klawitter and Ross Hier, area wildlife supervisor with the DNR, rescued the deer by boat, breaking through the ice to reach the deer that was trapped in the middle of the river.

It took less than two hours to arrange the plan and rescue the deer.

Klawitter remained humble about the situation saying if they didn't save the deer some citizen would have tried and could have been in a dangerous situation.

"It was our job, that's the way I look at it. And any of the firemen there or any of the firemen anywhere would have done the same thing; I don't think we did anything special it's just what we do," Klawitter said.

The doe was brought to shore, cold and shaking. A few hours later, she regained strength and walked away into the woods.
