. take all the fall bear fat and render it down... do it twice... probably the smoothest moisturizing cream there is... Native americans did that for skin and skeeters,black flies and many insects. Now days a scent can be added and lanolin to help it along.

do you have bird feeders? we don't feed birds up at the cabin during the summer months because of that. they usually get that way in the spring because of lack of natural foods right out of hibernation.

Glenn57, We don't have much at the camp site.  No food, of any sort is stored there.  As shown in the picture, we just have the shed, and in the fall a camper is brought there.  (This shed is 1.5 miles from a dirt road). Although it is hard to beat in the spring and a great place in the fall, it is not a summer time "cabin" or recreation place.  Way too many bugs from Memorial Day till mid August.

One way to get rid of them if you don't get drawn and you really want some thinned out is to lease it out.  I see adds all the time on the list of guys looking to lease out land for hunting purposes.  Bear hunting may be different though because I guess I wouldn't have applied if I  didn't already have a place to hunt.  But it would be worth a shot.  I would also think someone who leased it out would be more responsible then just letting anyone out there.  Plus you could take the wife out to Red Lobster with your extra cash.

DEADEYE..........I hear ya on the bugs. my family has had a cabin on a lake in Itasca county since 1965. I remember about twice the bugs were so bad it sent us home early. your setup looks similar to ours......surrounded by woods. plus we have lakes surrounding us with a fair amount of bog. we keep the lawn cut which really helps. helps also to use an older mower that happens to burn a little oil!!!!!!!

Plenty of swamps and beaver ponds for skeeters but the worst is the deer flies.  They don't give a rip about repellent, they just want a bite of you.  Lots of golden rod in the area so lots of deer flies.  I usually make a pass through once in June and again in July but usually keep the doors closed and the windows up. 
 

I checked the bear lottery stats.  If the same people apply every year, it will take me 9 years to get drawn.  Now, I know some drop out and some die each year, so it's not likely to take that long.  Last year everyone with 4 preference points got a permit and 30% of those with 3 points were drawn.

Boar it's area 45 and there are only 150 permits.

General, leasing isn't an option for me.  I know people lease hunting land but I would rather invite people than have someone pay me to be there.  Bear is tough because the permit issue.  Hard to lease land to someone who may not get a license to hunt there.
