So who here's been on a traditional deer camp snipe hunt?  My dad clued me in early on as to what a snipe hunt was so I could avoid getting left holding the bag.  I went up to camp with some buddies one year and they thought they had me dead to rights-sent me down to the end of a logging road behind camp with the gunny sack and the whistle, expecting me to stay out there for several hours blowing he whistle and waiting for them to "herd" the snipe to me.  I took a shortcut back to the cabin, doubletimed it back, and was waiting for them when they showed up.  Turned the tables on 'em pretty good, as all three of them spent the rest of the night digging pine needles out of their sleeping bags.

Does anyone here have a deer sinch at camp?  These are seen in many deer camps, including mine, in Pa.  A deer sinch is a wrought iron rod with a barbed point on one end, and a loop on the other end.  The story goes that the nimrod sneaks into the woods the night before deer season, finds a buck, stuffs the point up the bucks arse, and then hooks the loop over a tree stump.  Come back on opening morning and it's a sinch to get your deer.  This mythical device is supposed to bring good luck the group, but it must be displayed in the camp where all can see it and benefit from it's mystical powers.

Who has quirky camp traditions?  Always interesting to hear what goes on at other camps.  Good luck this fall guys.

We just tell and re-tell deer stories with significant embellishments as time goes by.  That 150 yard shot becomes 220 yards.  The deer that was walking across the field was at a full run.  The 205 pound buck becomes 220+.  The snow storm that dropped 6 inches now is remembered as over a foot.  The cold morning hunt -20 degrees was probably closer to zero.  Well, you get the picture. ;)
