  D-N-R Won't Guarantee A Walleye Ice Fishing Season

(St. Paul, MN) -- Even though Governor Mark Dayton says he will insist on a walleye ice fishing season at Mille Lacs Lake, the D-N-R won't guarantee it will happen. The state agency is about to start a three-week analysis of the walleye population. The latest survey found the walleye population struggling and annual harvest limits already passed. D-N-R officials say they won't know until the middle of October whether Mille Lacs will be opened for ice fishing or not. Many resort owners at the lake say the winter months make up three-fourths of their annual business. Biologists don't know why the walleye population is declining.
