So today the bite was a little slow and the kids were whining so I hooked up a sled to a 100 ft rope and gave them a ride around.  Never got over 10 mph and the 2 cops come running over yelling at me. The one cop said that's not safe and we needed to stop and starts walking away when the other cop jumps in and said it's a safety violation and he doesn't give breaks for those.

I asked for a break because I was going slow.  He snapped back that he was because he could give me tickets for each of the 2 kids not wearing a helmet. After writing the ticket he starts counting our tipups.  There were 7 of us and we had 14 lines down. He counted them 3 times.  Funniest part was when one of my buddies kids (7 year old) says to the cop.  Why did you count them 3 times?  They didn't move. You must have a short memory or something.

Sorry to hear about cops perhaps not making the best choices. I would never give someone a ticket for playing with their kids (and playing games that I would have loved as a kid). Curious if they were young cops. Amazing how naive people can be that don't have kids. Wish I would have been there (I would have slapped a Fawkinnae sticker on their bumper).

Yes he was a young cop.  We alway did it as a kid.  Best sleds were the round metal disks.  If I can get the girls up we will be out there tomorrow.  If they bail on me I will be there myself.

I agree with everything said here.  Then cops wonder why they get a bad rap. :bonk:

What law states kids have to wear a helmet on a sled?  I do this with my kids around the yard 4 or 5 times a winter.  Heck we hook up 2 sleds behind the ranger and don't wear helmets.

Looks like the cop was right...
 from the handbook...

Equipment Requirements
All snowmobiles operated on public lands, waters, or roadways must be equipped as follows:
Helmet
• Operators or riders under 18 years of age must wear an approved helmet, except when participating in a parade or operating on land belonging to a parent, grandparent, sibling, uncle, or aunt.
An approved helmet must meet federal law, which requires the helmet to display the symbol DOT. DOT is the manufacturer’s certification that the helmet conforms to motor vehicle safety standards. Standard bicycle and hockey helmets are not legal helmets for snowmobiling.   :coffee:

Oh sled as in snowmobile.  I was thinking the kids were riding on a sled that was being pulled.  Yeah then the police were right.

The kids were  being pulled in a sled with a 100 foot rope behind atv.

Yeah that is what I thought you meant.  Back to the cops needing something better to do in my opinion.

I am going to wager you could fight the ticket but a judge would rule in favor of better to being safe then sorry. Actually if you think about it a atv going t 10mph with a 100 foot tow rope making a turn would accelerate the end of the rope beyond ten mph just like a skier on a tow rope. Don't take much to cause  an injury when a soft head hits ice or an object. Of course only DaKids was there and he as a parent would have control of the situation I can see the ticket though perhaps a warning would have been sufficient.

Towing without a ridged hitch.  Not going to fight ticket.  Day off without pay is more than ticket.  He is a minnetrista cop and they are all ticket happy assholes.

Yeah I guess he has you there.  What a dip  :censored:!  Hopefully this cop is stuck somewhere in the mud and needs a tow.  Hey officer I'd give you a tow but I only have this tow strap.

I did a little research, and it is illegal to also pull your portable fish house with a rope.

No snow.  I believe what Dakids is saying is that if you are pulling your portable with your snowmobile or wheeler it is illegal to just use a rope.  You have to buy or make a hitch to pull it legally.  I pulled my old portable for years behind my wheeler using just a rope but I did buy the hitch system for my new one.

So, your saying you can't pull a couple guys across the field on an old car hood being pulled behind a 52 Plymouth?  Damn, no fun anymore.
