Ice out

  The weather has been driving me crazy the last couple of weeks. It looked like an early ice out a few weeks ago however now I'm not to sure about that. The Hatchery on the "Pike river" is open and they will begin the Walleye trapping very soon.  Pike bay however is still ice covered except for a small area at the mouth of the river. We need to see some warm weather in the next two weeks to see an average ice out date(April 27th) Man I am so ready for open water.

Looks like we're going to get an early ice out with the forecast change, going to be very warm beginning Monday and continuing until at least the 21st (barring some unforeseen circumstances)
There's only about 14 inches of ice which was weakened several weeks ago with the warn weather and rain, so it won't take long!!

Even with the warm weather on the way it should still be at least a couple of weeks before ice out on Vermilion.  That would put it right near the average ice out date. One thing we do know for sure, it will eventually melt and we'll be back on the water.  Only 34 days until the opener.

My dock is now surrounded by water.
The west end of Pike bay is open to Duffy island and even Big bay looks pretty dark right now. With the warm temps and the strong wind it won't take to long before she opens up.

Big bay is still about 1/2 ice covered that I can see from shore.  I haven't put the boat in yet because I have some things to do to it before it goes in the water.  Might be open by the weekend and that would put it just a few days ahead of the average ice-out date. The official date will be announced after a fly over by a local pilot.
