Here is an antivirus program that I've been using for some time now with excellent results.  Oh and it's FREE!!!!  ;D  (A good friend put me on to it)

AVG Free Antivirus by Grisoft
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

Also a FREE spyware program as well.  Again, use it, and like it...no problems since I've been using it!

Those are both good.  There are a couple of others that should also be mentioned.

I have a very good version of norton installed, but talking to the on the phone to a tech guy who helped me fix my email and internet connection problems, I asked him what he suggests for protection and he said that they reccomend AVG free version. he said it doesnt have all the bells and whistles, but you dont need them anyway for the most part.
that said alot for AVG to me.
I also run the spybot search and destroy once a week and dump temporary internet files once a week. this really seems to speed things back up.

I don't blame the guy from Norton recommending something different.  I consider the newest version of Norton to be worse than any virus that you can get.  Any of the free antivirus programs are a lot better than the two big companies (Symantec and McAfee) and they will not slow your computer down.

Zone alarm has a free firewall that I have been using for a few months now with no problems.  If you are a home user the program is free, but if it is for business use you have to pay.

How does that work?

Personally I will NEVER put norton on my computer again.  I had a problem a few months back with it causing my computer to hang up on shutdown.  Tried to uninstall the program using their uninstall program and no mater what I did I could not get it to uninstall.  To ma ke a long story short, ending formating the harddrive and loaded up avast antivirus and zonealarm firewall.  Every since then i have no problems what so ever and don't the performance lag I did with Norton.  Plus you cannot beat the price of the free programs.

That is exactly why I dumped Norton as well.  It slowed my pc down to a snails pace.  Sure this old pc isn't very fast-but I need every lil bit of speed I can get out of it!  I'm VERY satisfied with AVG.
