I would have no problem buying a Chevy half ton but I can't stand the 5.3 motor.  I had one and it drank oil like Glenn drink smurf juice.  Never again.  I have a hard time getting past the box look of the new Chevys.  However I've always liked the ride.  If Chevy had an ecoboost and a better price I'd give it a hard consideration.  The new aluminum f150 and an ecoboost is still in the cards.  I did go and test drive a 2017 ram today and it was nice...only complaint I have over ford is seeing the big hood on the dodge vs the ford you see pretty much all road and the back seat leg room in a fords is way better.  Still searching but we will see.  Thanks for the input guys.

I have not Reb.  I'm trying to come to terms with buying a Dodge  ;).   I'm a long way from being able to buy a Toyota.

We got a new ford last fall, its my wife's truck. She traded an 09 crew f150 5.4 on a 16 crew f150 with the little tiny 2.7 eco.

She went to the shorter bed on her new truck, last one had the 6.5' bed, the new one has the 5.5'. for parking in town mostly.

I did the first oil change on the little eco boost last saturday. 5000 miles.

I drive an 08 superduty with 6.4 diesel. It's my work truck, I hang a V plow on it in the winter.

I would like to go to a crew (I have ext cab currently). I wan't a 6.2 gasser rather than the diesel.

As far as our new truck though, I love that thing. It drives and handles so nice, the engine makes the front end so light, center of gravity is better because it's positioned back further. The little truck is a hot rod too! Lots of jam in that baby eco boost, I was shocked!

fuel economy is great, ride is great, cab is super quiet and huge, no rust concerns with all aluminum and the ice fishers will like the selectable locking rear diff. I love that for the lake, flip the switch and the rear end is locked.
5000 miles, so far we absolutely love it.

another plus for ice fishermen, it's a crew cab (huge cab) 4x4 that weighs less that 5000 lbs. She's pretty light on her feet, which is nice out on the ice.

Yeah,they all have a hefty price tag,GM still has the tried and proved v-6 in they're 1/2ton trucks,no worries down the road with the twin turbo's shuttin down but the engine has good power running empty,guyz I know that have the f150 withthe eco boost tell me if they were to do over they would have the 5.4lit v-8 as the eco mpg's goes into the toilet under load.And yes the 5.3 in 07,08 and 09 had gas consumption issues on 1 outof 5 1500,early years GM put new engines in under warrety,later the did the seals and rings under warrenty for the fix.

BUT! if ya want power in your 1500 consider 6.2lit v8... take a looksey while on a hunting trip out west 6.2lit @ 75mph the mpg's read out.420Hp high out put and a 8spd tranny.

Snow, you need to start doing some research. Ford discontinued the 5.4 Triton in 2011. You'd have to settle for the 5.0 liter now. The 3.5 Ecoboost still whips 'em all on MPG, unless you're hammering it so the TT's are continually spooling up.
Guys are still battling Chevy on the OIL consumption issues, not gas consumption issues.  :coffee:

Sorry, this split from the above narrative... :scratch:

Guys are still battling Chevy on the OIL consumption issues, not gas consumption issues. It's gotten so bad, there are now aftermarket tuners/comps that disable the AFM and "dump can" systems you can buy that evacuate the oil drawback before it fries the plugs or bakes on the exhaust valves/piston ring lands.  Just sayin'. :coffee:

reb,I could careless what powertrain ford has,Ii merely pointed out what folks out west were telling me while we were hunting,the 5.4, 5lit now whatever,they got sucked into the eco boost claim to fame on milage a few years back,again if they had a do over they said stick with the 5.4lit back then...so today its the 5lit,point being go V8 vs the eco boost.

And ya got me on gas consumption,meant oil...gal dang thread police...But we all know we don'y buy a truck for fuel economy,its our work vehicle,I'm happy with 20mpg + or -,not along ago the avg on my older chevy was around 16mpg so the newer specs help some.

Thanks snow.  I would consider myself a Chevy guy but I can't stand their AFM system which is also on the 6.2l.  Maybe they have it figured out but I'm not taking that chance. If they do that would be a fantastic choice.   I have the ecoboost and it has been fantastic.  Way better than the 5.3 I did have.  I'd say as far as gas mileage between the 2 it was identical.  Except the Chevy shifted going up any hill and the ecoboost hardly ever shifts it just goes pulling the boat or fish house. If I could I'd take the ecoboost, aluminum body, dodge interior, ford leg room in the back seat, and the all important best feature ever the step in the tailgate on the ford.  Then make that ride like a Chevy.

That would be a shame. Interesting how my pickup experience has evolved. Started out with a 3/4 ton '90 Dodge CTD in '94, bought a '01 extended cab Dodge dually 24 valve CTD in '01 then in '10 went to a 3/4 ton '07 extended cab 5.7 hemi and have been impressed with it. Moves well in traffic and for a gasser, plenty of torque for what I need. Mileage on trips bobtail has been up to 17. Pulling livestock trailer loaded about 11.5. At 125,000 miles I may have it a few more years then see what I want to do. For now it's fine.

The truck makers seem to be  dropping all their big engine, except diesels, in favor of the turboed up V-6's,  which I just don't care for. When I ordered Mr. Sparkles, I knew it was the last year for the 5.4 Triton, and figured I'd have better resale value down the road if I got the Triton. Lots of my motorhead buddies guys at the weekly car show swear by that engine, and I've always liked it. Just for poops and giggles, my buddy, who was also the Ford salesman, talked me into taking one with the Ecoboost trucks home overnite. I did, and put it thru it's paces. Sure, it scoots really good, and lists out at about 35 more ponies than mine, but I just didn't care for that light front end. To me, after wrenching on these things all my life, and owning my V-6 Stranger, it felt like what it was...a high-revving turbo V-6.  Still can't beat the throaty sound of a V-8 barking thru that Borla exhaust!  :happy1:

Got that right Reb. Was thinking the same thing about the gutural growl from the hemi as I rolled down main today. Contrast that to the whiny little ecoboost 4 popper in the wife's fusion. Great mileage but doesn't do much for me in the man card dept.  confused-3316.gif

Well I pulled the trigger on a new ram this morning.  I'm happy so far and will put some pics up.  Funny thing is they had a guy call me about my truck I traded in this afternoon and sold it I believe.  Like I said it was a great truck and I had zero complaints about it.  That guy should be happy with his purchase.

Good show General. I'm somewhat biased although I've owned and driven all the Big 3 over the years. Things I liked about all of them & things I'd change after driving them. Enjoy your new machine!  :happy1:
