I'm going to attempt to grow some sugar snap peas this years. I'm burned out on all the peppers and mato's of many years. So...any tips on peas? Only want one or two plants, as I only have a small allotted growing area in my big yard.

I did snap peas this year and they were pretty easy. I just put them in two planters on the back porch and they grew just fine. We had peas into late October and the deer even hit them twice and they grew back with no problem. Plant them where they get plenty of morning sunshine but very little or none afternoon or evening sun, they don't like too much sun or being over watered.
if you kick me when I'm down you better pray I don't get up.

I planted peas a few times. started them from the seed packet. seems a lot of work for what you get...... but hot dang they where tasty outta da garden. just seems it takes a lot of plants/peas to make a meal. but they sure were good eating them right in the garden!!!!!! good luck rebster!!!

The one thing I forgot to mention is if you only want to do a couple of plants try what we did. I did grow them from seed and I planted them two weeks apart because like glen said you don't get many. Our plants produced  about 12 to 20 at a time so since I planted them 2 weeks apart I was picking peas off of one plant while the other was just finished flowering and starting to grow. That worked most of the summer until the deer got them and when they grew back they were producing peas at the same time
if you kick me when I'm down you better pray I don't get up.

No problems with blight, fungus, leaf curl, anything like that?

About the only disease issue they've had here is with powdery mildew. I've grown them in partial shade and restricted air movement is part of the equation. There have been lots of green peas grown in this area and one thing I've learned from that is they get root rot easily if planted back in the same spot more than about once every 4 - 5 years. They'll look good until we get into monsoon season then all the sudden they'll turn yellow and die. Bunnies and deer love them so it's a battle some years trying to actually get any to eat at the ranch. I like to grow a spring planting then plant another batch starting the end of July into early August in a different spot.

O great...it's hopper heaven over here. Maybe my luscious lawn will be enough to keep them pacified. They're going right where the big tomato plant was...bewteen the deck and chain link fence. Will they grow "outwards" from there more than that tomato plant did? Need room to drive the red rocket past there while mowing.....

They generally like to climb. Can't remember exactly how your set up was arranged but if they're planted 6" or so from the fence chances are they'll climb on that.

From what I seen there, there is a little valley. Ground might also be a bit hard. I came to the conclusion it comes from sneekin to the NL's!!! :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Easy peasey and delicious, I usually do some sampling while picking too. They do grow quite long so after they scale the fence you might have to help them back down your side, unless that's your way of doing some trolling with the NL.  sleazy-422.gif

Hey Glenn boy!! I was digging around in that living room bookcase, and found a great "growing vegetables" book I've had for years, but forgot all about. neat thing is, there's page after page of every veggie there is, and charts of growing zones, how many day long the season, that tell ya when to plant, how much, what date, how long they need, how deep, how to do it, and on and on...for every single  veggie listed. It's great! Need any info, just ask, I'm glad to look it up for anyone!  :cheesy:

Will do, generally speaking the things I plant I have a pretty good handle of!

So did you go get your pea seeds yet at your favorite Chinese manufacturing store yet?
