Hey Auggie didn't you say that you raised pigs for you and some buddies?  I saw it but couldn't remember where it was.  You talked about $1 a lb and I think that was live weight.  Right?  Or does that include butchering?  Just wondering.  I buy a half from my neighbor each year.  He has them butchered adds that to the price of the hog and I just pay for it all boxed up and frozen.  Works great.

That's live weight. I butcher my own. Some of my buddies get together and butcher their own as well. If someone else wants them I'll haul them into the local locker. We do it ourselves to save a few bucks and an excuse to get together and have a few cocktails! I have a saw and grinder and we like to experiment with different seasoning and casings ect.

It's not for everyone. But I like knowing what goes into my meat. I'm not organic, but I don't medicate or add anything to my feed. They get some pasture and grow a little slower. To me the texture is firmer than confinement hogs. And I know how they are fed.

Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against the confinement guys. I understand we can't feed the world pork demand raising hogs like I do. I have even worked in confinement setups in my younger years. Farrowing barns and feeders.

I grew up on the farm, and I'm just continuing to raise them like we always did. Dirt and sun. Can't beat it. And I have enough people that think the same way I do that want pork raised this way. More every year. So I can eat like I want and make a couple bucks for the extra work and time that goes into raising them this way.

Just added a new girl to the herd today. Finally after a couple years of looking I was able to find a registered pure bred Hereford that I could afford. Bred gilt. Excited to add this new blood!

That sounds great Auggie.  I still buy some meat in the store when on sale but I can sure tell a difference from the meat from the neighbor.  The hog I guy is always firmer meat.  The stuff in the store actually stretches when you pick it up.  lol

I can see how you woulda been excited/confused Rebs! All this talk about adding a new girl and firm and it's bound to happen: :laughroll: :laughroll:
Don't worry I didn't steal the neighbor lady!

Hereford is more of a red meat. It's not the pale pork most are used to. And it has excellent flavor.
I have had a Hereford boar for about 3 years crossing into my 3way mix sow. Makes for very good meat.
Now I can get a couple litters a year of the pure Hereford. What isn't sold as show or or breeding stock will be a little higher end meat for the table. Hopefully increasing my fun/gun money! ;)
