Keenum not committed to re-signing with Vikings in 2018

 :reporter; .....
Case Keenum is coming off a career year with the Minnesota Vikings, and it’s clear he’s looking forward to taking advantage of that in free agency this upcoming March.
On Monday, following a very disappointing end in the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Keenum made it clear he’s not going to make re-signing with the Vikings a top priority.

 :happy1:
This is a smart approach. While it’s true that his performance in the NFC Championship might have somewhat diminished Keenum’s value on the open market, there’s no doubt he’s still going to be one of the better options out there for quarterback-needy teams in free agency. And we know that teams aren’t opposed to spending mad cash on guys who aren’t exactly proven winners (cough, Mike Glennon, cough).

That said, one thing that could potentially happen that would put this outside Keenum’s control is that there’s always the chance Minnesota slaps the franchise tag on him.

  .....
It’s going to be fascinating to see what the Vikings do. They have all three quarterbacks — Keenum, Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Bradford — headed potentially out the door with expiring contracts. Furthermore, offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur is reportedly headed to New York to coach the Giants. So, there’s a whole lot going on there. :doah:

Just so we don't see Kamperweener sneakin :doah:' in the back alley door.....

The Oakland Raiders have a quarterback in Derek Carr they believe in, but there’s no doubt Jon Gruden needs an upgrade at the backup spot. And according to Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle, there’s a chance Colin Kaepernick could be the answer.

“YES, I DO BELIEVE MARQUETTE KING WILL GIVE UP HIS JERSEY NUMBER WHEN KAEPERNICK COMES ABOARD AS THE BACKUP TO DEREK CARR,” OSTLER WROTE. “BUT THE NUMBER ON THE JERSEY IS NOT IMPORTANT. WHAT IS IMPORTANT IS THAT THE RAIDERS NEED AN UPGRADE AT BACKUP QUARTERBACK, AND KAEPERNICK IS THE BEST OPTION, AND HE IS A PHONE CALL AWAY.”

There are lots of options, some more likely than others.  What do you think (or hope)?

Resign Keenum?
Resign Teddy?
Resign Teddy, franchise tag Keenum and let 'em duke it out next year?
Heck, resign Sammy?
Sign a proven free agent like Cousins or Garoppolo or Brees?
There are other notables retreads as well:  Josh McCown, Brandon Weeden, Ryan Mallett, Mark Sanchez, Chad Henne, Brock Osweiler, Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Blaine Gabbert, and JOE WEBB!
Trade for Alex Smith?
If all else fails, there is the always available J. Cut.

Man, I hope they sign Case!

If we’re going to have to pay big dollars for a QB get Brees or Cousins.

Cousins?  Sure.

I wanted Brees when the Chargers jettisoned him.  Now he is too far down the road to excite me.  I don't doubt Brees could have a season or two like Favre 2009, but he might also be a season or two away from Favre 2010.

If you go with an aging vet as a bridge to the quarterback of the future, that means you either have to find another one in a couple of years or bottom out record-wise to get a good one in the draft.  I'd rather take my chances on Teddy's high upside than to go with another aging veteran bridge quarterback.

Teddy has a high upside?  He sure seems like a nice guy with some ability to run a throw.  But when you can’t read a defense your upside is never very high.  I’d take Brees in a heartbeat if we are going to pay big money.  Now if say one of the 3 we have wants to stay around 4 or 5 mil a year and we get some better offensive linemen and someone to compliment Linval in the middle I like that too.

Pretty sure whoever they sign they're going to be paying a lot more than that. Bradford can't stay on the field, Teddy not havin played in so long is a issue, & not sure how I feel about Keenum. Kind of hopin that Keenum would like to stay for a reasonable amount of money( ~ $12-$15 mil) since he had such a good season & the Vikings were about the only team that was really interested last year. Doubt that happens though as there are so many teams that are QB hungry that I believe someone will offer him Cutler type money($20+ mil) & the Vikings won't want to go that high. I've heard some mention that they might franchise Keenum, I don't believe that either as that would be Cousin's type money, $25 + mil. It will be interesting to see how it plays out, as I think they've done a good job with personnel the last 2-3 years.

Qb salaries for 2017
Joe Flacco, Baltimore, $24.55 million

Alex Smith, Kansas City, $16.9 million
Derek Carr, Oakland, $15.7 million
Andy Dalton, Cincinnati, $15.7 million
Tom Brady, New England, $14 million
Mike Glennon, Chicago, $14 million
Jay Cutler, Miami, $10 million
Tyrod Taylor, Buffalo, $9.7 million
Jameis Winston, Tampa Bay, $6.9 million
Marcus Mariota, Tennessee, $6.6 million
Blake Bortles, Jacksonville, $6.57 million

DeShone Kizer, Cleveland, $899,711
Tom Savage, Houston, $765,146
Dak Prescott, Dallas, $635,848
Trever Siemian, Denver, $628,196

Take out Bradford and Glennon (only the bears would be dumb enough to pay him that kind of money).  Any QB on the list above Cutler I would take vs any QB on our roster last year.  Well maybe not Daulton, health issues aside.

My first figures were wrong but I wouldn’t pay Teddy or Bradford above 7 or 8 mill.  Keenum maybe a little more but he struggles with reading defenses too.   Just my opinion but QB’s having that ability is just there.  Like a good hunting dog.  They either have it or they don’t.  A good coach like a good trainer can hone in those skills.  Like Culpepper, he had some really good years when he had moss and carter.  But when it came to him having to read a defense he was terrible.

The Viks need to stop messing up their first round picks.  Waynes is looking better but how do you miss not taking Marcus Peters.  I believe a pro bowl starter as a rookie vs a guy who rides the pine, can’t even beat out Nueman.  Treadwell?  Common man!

They now have a couple ways to get around the yearly salary figures so it all doesn't count against the cap. Signing bonus & guaranteed money are 2 of the more popular right now as they can/are paid for the length of the contract or even after they are done playing so that money can be used to sign other players. Hope your right G, personally I don't think they'll be able to sign a QB who keeps us in contention for the division for < $10 mil. Unless it's Teddy & he stays healthy & has a heck of a year.

Da 1 I heard yday, when the trade 1st came out, was that they can't even complete (sign anything) the trade until mid - March. The NFL guy for ESPN said that in order for the Redskins to keep Cousins they had to franchise him again for $29-$30 mil for 1 year. They weren't gonna do that so they were going lose him & get nothing in return. I think he was leavin anyway since they made no effort to even talk to him during the season. I'll believe it when I see it. :bs: They can probably franchise Keenum & sign Teddy to a new deal for quite a bit less.

Nope, I don't like the idea of spending so much on Cousins.

Teams that overpay superstars have to give up talent at other positions.  The reason we were able to improve our offensive line last year and keep the defense in tact was because we weren't overpaying at QB, wide receiver, etc.

If I was a top flight QB, I'd be glad to take a few million less if it meant being able to afford better linemen for protection and running game.  Its all Monopoly money at that point.

I see the price for a good starting QB went up in price overnight. SF gave Garroppolo $137.5 mil for 5 years with somethin around a 3 year guarantee of $90 mil after starting less than 1/2 a season. Where's that put Cousins, Keenum, & any of the other FA QB's. :bonk:
