Packers releasing Jordy Nelson, signing Jimmy Graham

The Packers have released longtime receiver Jordy Nelson and signed tight end Jimmy Graham, ESPN.com reported Tuesday.

The decision to cut Nelson creates $10.2 million in cap space for the Packers and leaves just $2.3 million in dead money.
The move came minutes after the reported signing of Graham, who has spent the last three years in Seattle. It was rumored that Graham would return to New Orleans, especially after the Saints re-signed quarterback Drew Brees, but that was not the case.

Nelson, 33, spent his entire 10-year career in Green Bay, but he slowed down significantly last season. His yards per catch was 9.1 in 2017, which was much lower than previous years.
But given how fast Nelson bounced back from a torn ACL in 2015 and his stellar 2016 campaign, cutting him was not an anticipated move.

I've always had great respect fur Jordy Nelson. When crunch time came in a tight game he always seemed to be "da go to guy" ta make dat one more needed catch.  I hope he lands a spot on anudder team where he kin show da pack he still has it!

I don't know about how Aaron Rodgers felt about losing Jordy, but we do know how he felt after they fired his QB coach without asking him first.  He was not a Happy Packer.

A-Rog has 2 years left on his deal.  When it is time to resign, he doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who will take a home-town discount - even if the team is good.  He strikes me as the kind of guy who wants to be the highest paid player in the league.  If the Packers won't do that, someone else probably will.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers bid farewell to wide receiver Jordy Nelson on Tuesday after the team announced the 32-year-old had been released.

  Former teammate: Packers “really, really low-balled” Jordy Nelson

So as a guy in position to know, he also knows that the Packers offered Nelson a severe pay-cut before releasing him earlier this week.
Jones told Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the Packers insulted Nelson with their offer.

“I’m not going to say what they offered him, but they really, really low-balled him,” Jones said. “It wasn’t even anything you would consider. Even with all that, he was still considering taking it.”
Jones has been there, having been set free by the Packers himself, and he said he knew Nelson was stung personally by the way the deal went down.

The Packers cleared $10.25 million in cap room by releasing Nelson, money they immediately turned into Jimmy Graham and Muhammad Wilkerson, and part of which they’re stashing for the eventual Aaron Rodgers extension.

“He’s given the organization everything he has, at least give him one more season,” Jones said. “It’s not going to hurt the team. He’s going to help you. He could have given you one more year.
“But at the end of the day, it’s a business. You should never be surprised. I’ve seen Peyton Manning and Charles Woodson and so many other people get released.”


While the Packers might have made the offer, their interest in other receivers suggests they simply wanted to move on. In that case, going low wasn’t as much an offer to bring Nelson back, but an attempt to make sure he didn’t.
