Oboy!!!  Another new hotel to eat up downtown! Ya, we need more! Sure!

Mary Gastner, the interim executive director of Experience Rochester (Rochester's conventions visitors and bureau), tallied 5,393 available hotel rooms at 54 city hotels at the start of 2019. (There have since been 2 added)

Rochester Post Bulletin

A $2 million deal to buy 0.41 acres of open land on Rochester's Second Street Southwest clears the way for a new six-story hotel project. TPS Rochester LLC bought the land at 601 Second St. SW on the northwest corner of Second Street and Sixth Avenue Southwest from Portland Real Estate LLC. Portland Real Estate is based in Rochester and led by Brooks Edwards. The sale clears the way for a group led by Jeff Brown Jr. and Mike Zirbes, of North Rock Real Estate, and Collin Nash to develop a 109-room, six-story Towneplace Suites by Marriott hotel. The new hotel will be just south of the Mayo Ozmun building.

And on a lighter note... saw this one today...

The amazing Martinez

It was the first day of school and a new student named Martinez, the son of a Mexican restaurateur, entered the fourth grade. The teacher said, "Let's begin by reviewing some American history. Who said "Give me Liberty, or give me Death?" She saw a sea of blank faces, except for Martinez, who had his hand up. "Patrick Henry, 1775."

"Very good! Who said 'Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth'"? Again, no response except from Martinez: "Abraham Lincoln, 1863.", said Martinez. The teacher snapped at the class, "Class, you should be ashamed. Martinez, who is new to our country, knows more about its history than you do."

She heard a loud whisper: "Screw the Mexicans." "Who said that?" she demanded. Martinez put his hand up. "Jim Bowie, 1836."

At that point, a student in the back said, "I'm gonna puke." The teacher glares and asks "All right! Now, who said that?" Again, Martinez says, "George Bush to the Japanese Prime Minister, 1991."

Now furious, another student yells, "Oh yeah? Suck this!" Martinez jumps out of his chair waving his hand and shouts to the teacher, "Bill Clinton, to Monica Lewinsky, 1997!"

Now with almost a mob hysteria someone said, "You little crap. If you say anything else, I'll kill you." Martinez frantically yells at the top of his voice, "Gary Condit to Chandra Levy 2001."

The teacher fainted. And as the class gathered around the teacher on the floor, someone said, "Oh crap, now we're in BIG trouble!" Martinez said, "Saddam Hussein 2003."

Question for today: What is the nick-name for the screech owls (eastern) we have here in Minnesota?

(From Clarissa the naturalist at Oxbow Nature Center here...)

The number of bats they're killing is even more problematic. With the white nose syndrome raising cain with bats, the last thing we need is these noisy, scenery polluting eyesores picking off even more of them. Glad to see they put that last batch on hold. Bat numbers were lower this last year at the ranch than they've been since we've lived there.

I feel for that older couple that had their nice country house in the vicinity of that ugly windmill.  I grew up in SW MN.  That area is booming with windmills.  At first it was an interesting and curious thing.  Now by Lake Benton which is a beautiful area of hills and valleys and now all you see is windmills.  Completely ruined the beauty of the area.  What a shame.  SO they turn off the turbins on the river when the windmills turn.  Why bother with them.  Just leave the turbins on night and day.

Didn't White Nose wipe out the entire population down in Niagara Caves?

It has gotten into the bats that winter in the sudan mine...
https://www.duluthnewstribune.com/news/3982805-bats-soudan-mine-dying-white-nose-syndrome

White-nose syndrome, the deadly fungus that has killed millions of bats in the eastern U.S. and Canada, has been found in dead bats in Northeastern Minnesota's Soudan Underground Mine.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reported the finding Wednesday.

Several hundred bats have been found dead near the main entrance to the mine since January, and a sample sent to a federal wildlife laboratory confirmed the cause was white-nose syndrome.

It’s the first time bats have been confirmed as dying from the disease in Minnesota.....
(skip a bunch)
The fungus also has been detected in Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park in southeastern Minnesota, but bats have not been found dead there as of yet.

I meant Mystery Caves. Just 40 bats were left this March of 2019, they stated this Fall it appears they have all died.
Looks like the cave is now sans bats.

DNR: Nearly all of the bats in Mystery Cave State Park are gone

March 29, 2019

MINNESOTA NEWS

TOP STORIES
NEAR PRESTON, Minn. (KTTC/AP) – Nearly all of the bats at Mystery Cave State Park in Fillmore County have been wiped out from a fungal disease, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

White Nose Syndrome was first confirmed in Northeastern Minnesota, but the disease has spread to our region. The DNR observed a 94 percent decline at Mystery Cave State Park near Preston compared to the last investigation in 2015.

Experts say this latest news is concerning, but not surprising. The disease is spread bat-to-bat, but people can actually carry spores from one cave to another.  For several years, cave tours have started with a lesson on how to prevent spreading the disease.

Fewer bats means more insects and moths, which can damage crops.
