Most vets will do it.  If yours doesn't, another one will.

Most vets charge between $35-50.00,  I believe it is another $15 to register them with the chipping service. (Home Again is the biggest I believe).  Takes a grand total of about 5 seconds to do it....  Most vets and pounds now carry the reader so you will have a good chance of getting your pooch back if it happens to stray from you.

Good Luck!

You are lucky if the vet charges 35.00 to 50.00 our vets in Grand Rapids are 90.00-120.00 for the chip plus office call of 35.00 It is 17.00 to register with Home Again.  I got Certified by Schering Plough(manufacturer of Home Again chips) to microchip and I buy boxes of chips at a time and they cost 30.00 a chip. So I pass it on to people that purchase puppies from me can have their pups microchiped for 30.00 I also do it for anyone who would like it done for the same price. If you have any questions about Home Again Chips just let me know

A good place you may want to check with is your local animal shelter. Ours up here does microchipping for a lesser price than the vets.

In my earlier post I just wanted to let you know that you should just check around for pricing and if you had any questions about the chip you could ask. Good luck hope you find someone reasonable.

I have all my pets chiped now, my daughters cat got out on us one day and I fired up the lawn mower only to see a white streak go across the road and then across the boulvard.

Found the cat four days later at the pound, one more day and the UM would have had a healthy cat to test thier stuff on.

I had the dog chiped as soon as I got her back from the trainer, didn't want to loose a $2500 dog .

It cost me $65 each pet and $10 to reg at home again because the vet is also a shelter for cats.

When i got my pup last year she was already chipped from the shelter ( cost $50  ) my vet checked it and told me it was working. Then 6mo later the vet could not find the chip   it slipped from the back of her neck down her leg.

My vet said there are differant brands of chips and some of the cheaper ones will slip sometimes. Just something to think about or talk to your vet about.

if your dog is found a vet will not look down it's  legs for a chip!!!

There is only 2 brands of Chips in the US They are Home Again and Avid Chips. There is another chip it is called a Euro Chip and they are mostly found in Europe or animals shipped from there. My scanner reads both Avid and Home Again Chips. Plus depending on when your dog was chipped that is what happened with the older chips. All the new home again chips have a chemical that once they are implanted they start creating scar tissue to hold them in place. When I got certified by Shering Plough that is the first thing they told me that if someone brought a lost dog to me to scan I was to scan the entire body because the old chips did move around the body. Hope this helps. Neither of these chips are cheap! I did alot of homework before I invested alot of money into microchipping equipment.

Vickies

Thanks for the info but now i have a question if you don't mind?

I was also told that in the pound they chip them when the pups are put under for surgery. (spayed or neutered) Because it is painfull.
I would like to get a new chip put in her just in case she ever gets lost, and they don't do a full body scan. I don't want to sound paranoid its just that she is family. I'm sure you understand.

Anyhow is it very painfull? she,s now 13mo old

                        Thanks

Bowhunter it is no more painful than giving the dog a shot. Home Again Chips come individually wrapped and the chip is in a syringe with a needle on it. You just place the needle subcutaneous(just under the skin) and and push the plunger just like you would do giving a vaccination wahla your done takes a split second if your good a whole second if your not ;D ;D ;D. Do not be afraid. If you are close to me you are more than welcome to have me do it if not, maybe use the place that rchaze60 used. If you have anymore questions please feel free to ask.

Bow; I had my golden done at Banfield and I was in and out in about 10 minutes more time waiting than implanting the chip the vet put it right between the shoulder blades i think it took maybe 5 seconds if that and he told me that the home again chip will not slip to other parts of body
