I need (want) a new landing net. I think I'd like to get one of those rubber nets that you don't spend the next 1/2 hour after every walleye pulling your barbs out of the damn net. Anybody have one they especially like? Mostly for walleyes.

And soon to come - I want to suck every sliver of information I can get from all of you thoughtful anglers on trolling cranks for walleyes.
Coming in March 2007!!!

What do you need a net for? You never catch fish anyways. ;)

I have a Frabill net that works great, I have no problems with any hooks getting stuck, it's not the fat rubber style, this one is rubber but is skinny, like the old rope ones. Paid around $25 or so, 2 years ago.

Hmmm... I think you're describing the ones that have a black coating - looks like they took a convertional net and dipped it in some leftover pickup bed liner goop. One thing I like about the rubber ones is they stretch so they take of less room. And your right I don't catch any fish - that's why I asked my wife to bear me a son. But sadly now Wyofish wanders the west looking for a new father.

I have one of each

The rubber one is 3 years old (Frabill); only got used the first season I had it.
I'd gladly let you have it for half the price of a new one.

The coated one, (a Stowmaster)  I got  June of last year for a birthday present from my wife; yup she's a keeper.   Unless someone can pry it from my rigormortized fingers, they'll have to bury me with that net ! ! !  8)

Well you're close...some might say I'm simply full of it!   ;D

The wife has been known to say I am a "horn" something or another as well!  I can't quite remember how she puts it.   ;D

One way to avoid getting hooks caught in the net is don't use the whole net. I usually grab the netting hold it to the handle so the net is actually about 6" deep, works for me.

Hey Deperado - what didn't you like about the rubber one? Was it the rubber or was the frabill not as good a net (well made) as the stowmaster? Does Stowmaster make a rubber net? Bear with me I'm just trying to pick your brain. Thanks.

Griz you make a good point.

I like any "coated" or "dipped" net better than an "all rubber" net because I think the rubber netting is too thick on the all rubber net.  This causes too much water resistance and makes it heavy to pull through the water.  I like a quick scooping action when I want the fish netted and I think a coated net moves faster through the water than an all rubber net.  I've never had hooks catch in either of these two nets; have had a lot of hooks caught in every other net I've ever used though.
I also like the design of the Stowmaster; it's sturdy, easy to fold up, easy to stow/store, and easy to unfold when it's time to start fishin'.  However they do cost 2 to 3 times as much as a coated frabil; and I think a coated Frabil will net fish just as good.  If I wanted something more than Frabil but less than Stowmaster, I'd go with a Beckman.  The foldup and stow in a smaller space is what you pay for with a Stowmaster.

That being said, I live in North Saint Paul.  If you want to try my all rubber net this spring, come get it.  Try it until the 4th of July.  If you don't like it bring it back and buy me a beer, we'll call it even.  If you do like it after you've tried it out, I'll sell it to you for half the price of a new one.
