It was the AIAW before Title IX was passed (72) & all the schools were forced to have an equal # of women's programs too. AIAW=Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women.

Gophers have only won 10 conference games twice this century.  That's 23 years. Last in 2016. They have 9 now with 2 left. I don't think there are ANY Un of MN alum playing in the NBA today.

They are 18-11 right now. They played 11 non-conference games. 1 out of those 11 was against a Power 5 Conference School. That was Missouri which they lost. Thanks AD Mark Coyle for the soft schedule.

Kind of shows how inept they have been. :pouty:

Gopher women beat Rutgers yesterday. Was a little surprised after they got destroyed at Penn St. by 56 pts. in their final game. Play Michigan at 8 p.m. on BTN reputedly. Last nite's women's BB game showed up on the Gopher's home website as being on BTN at 8 p.m. It was not. The men with their pathetic performance was.  :doah:

Amir Coffey is the only Gophers player I'm aware of playing in the NBA presently. Plays for the LA Clippers. Several alum coaching with several others playing in G league or internationally. No doubt, it's been a rough several decades starting with Clem's firing. Monson didn't get it done. According to a friend who was a HS coach, he had zero rapport with high school coaches. Tubby was a breath of fresh air at first but couldn't hang onto players like Royce White who later starred for IA St. or the stoner guard, Devoe Joseph, who left and starred at Oregon. Tubby's offense was offensive. Had he realized the error of his ways and brought in someone who could actually design & make them execute an offense, he might well have retired here. Throwing the ball around the outside until late in the shot clock and jacking up a desperation jump shot is not a recipe for success. Little Richard? Well, he did better than anticipated after he got rolling but still had a rough time keeping players eligible as well as getting MN kids & keeping them here. Some of them like Brad Davison, it's just as well. Not sure I would've enjoyed his antics here no matter what their record might've been. Tripping Nate Mason and seriously injuring him was bush league. I would've liked to have seen Jordan Murphy tune Davison up after he intentionally stuck his leg out, causing Murphy to land awkwardly on a rebound. Luckily Murphy wasn't injured and had more class than that or he would have torn Davison apart. Why I still maintain Gard is a piece of crap. If I want to watch garbage like that I'll watch the UFC.

The "Bad Gophers" showed up for the entire game against a very ordinary IN team. The "Good Gophers" never came to the rescue in the 2nd half. Down by 5 at halftime, I watched as they continued to dig themselves deeper to open the 2nd half. Had to feed bottle lambs and when I came back in, they were down 15. Time to watch Tales of Wells Fargo. Lost by 12. Carrington out with concussion. Ben plays 6 guys. They were gassed by the end of the game. Not sure what Ola-Joseph did to pi$$ in Ben's Wheaties but something is wrong there. Could've used another big body to take up space, get the ball down deep & score. 18 turnovers. Could not or would not get the ball inside. Stopped driving the ball at the IN guys already in foul trouble. Fell in the love with desperation 3 balls. Christie lets the B1G freshman of the week go to his head, hits 2 out of 9 from the 3 pt. line. Mitchell matches him & Hawkins delivers 0 for 5 from 3 pt. land. Only guy who looked alive was Parker Fox. A lot of this stuff comes back to coaching. After $hitting the bed against IN at home, beat Northwestern on the road? Surely you jest...:coffee:

Interesting your comment about Tubby...Before he came to Minnesota he won a National Title, 5 SEC regular season championships, and 5 SEC tourney titles at Kentucky.

Oh ya, no arguing that Tubby didn't do well at Kentucky. His .760 winning %-age was nothing to sneeze at. I was amazed when Joel Maturi announced MN had hired him. They sold lots of "It's Tubby Time" t-shirts. He was under a lot of pressure at Kentucky from entitled fans who expected more, especially in his later years there where they weren't as dominant as they had once been. They maintained he basically won the national title with Pitino's players but hey, at least he got them there. Never got back to a final 4 again despite his record. Fans' level of expectation is a lot higher than at MN. I remember hearing they were putting "For Sale" signs on his lawn towards the last. :doah:  Rumor had it he resigned before he got fired. At MN, Tubby ran afoul of AD Norwood Teague who wanted to put his own stamp on the athletic dept. He fired Tubby after they got beat in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament in 2013. Norwood put his own stamp on the athletic dept. alright. Fired for sexual harassment. :coffee: Tubby's career never reached the levels it had at Kentucky again after that. Sad really. Was a class act. Not always successfully, but worked hard to recruit MN players. Wished he could've stayed a few more years & turned it around.

Despite Nebraska hitting their 1st 6 or 7 3's & Caitlin Clark only having 4 pts the Iowa women come back from 11 down at the 1/2 to win their 3rd straight B1G tourney in OT.  :happy1:  The Hawkeyes outscored the Cornhuskers 40-24 in the 3rd & OT periods as Iowa's D & 4 games in 4 days finally caught up to Nebraska. Clark finished with 34/7/ & 12 assists, but it was some tough D by Marshall & Clark to get 3 stops in a row towards the end of OT that really sealed the deal. :cheerleader:

Gophers are in the NIT. Play Butler at Indianapolis on this Tuesday. 8 p.m. CDT on ESPNU

Sounds like the Hawkeyes are on at the same time, playing at home, televised on ESPN.

Such a party pooper! Guessing you'd rather be watching the Hallmark channel anyway. :moon:  :rotflmao:

Actually the Gophers game was fun to watch. Had seen Butler play a few times over the course of the season. Former Ohio St. coach Thad Matta coaches Butler, his alma mater. Was interested to see how the Gophers would stack up against them on their home court.

Interesting how Iowa and Butler used to be perennial NCAA Tournament teams.

Do they not make it in now because there are so many other automatic bids - or are they having down years - or a combination of both?

I think it's a combination of both. That and the portal with the infusion of NIL $ has changed the game. What was a crappy squad one year can suddenly become a contender the next. And vice versa. Michigan last in the B1G and Nebraska being a player are two examples.

Coaches asked for. Their own fault. Over the past 20-25 years coaches have moved from 1 team to another. Even during the week before a tournament game. WHY?????    MONEY......so why shouldn't the kids be able to do the same??? Yes it has really changed College sports. BUT, can't fault the kids for wanting to do what their coaches are doing.

 The NCAA is the biggest old boy network college sports has ever seen, except for maybe the schools themselves. They had to have made billions of $ off just the TV rights of men's college sports before they had Title IX shoved down their throat by SCOTUS. They refused to even attempt to share a little of that money & look where that greed got them. Sorry, but they got what they deserved. I do agree though, they need to do some adjustments to what's currently going on because it's out of control.

Now guys like Tom Izzo say they want retired coaches and explayers on the committee who makes the decision about who makes the 68 team Tournament. They are saying that the new rule allotting a place for conference championship teams is diluting it. With larger P5 conferences getting bigger they want more P5 teams instead of those bottom feeding small school conferences.....Bullsh*t.

What will happen in the future???? The P5 schools will break away from the NCAA and form their own governing body. With a P5 national tourney. Guess who will get the BIG TV contracts for Football and Basketball???

Is a homecoming in the works for now-former Northern Iowa basketball standout Nate Heise?

According to Darren Wolfson of KSTP-TV, the Minnesota Gophers have interest in the All-Missouri Valley Conference third team selection who averaged 13.5 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game this season.

"Nate would be a solid get for the [Gophers]," Wolfson tweeted, adding that Minnesota has "definite interest" after Heise entered the NCAA transfer portal earlier this week.
