Has anyone owned goats or know someone that has? Are they high maintenance?? I wouldn't mind getting a few for the yard ;D Someone told me that their hoofs require some maintenance?

HMmmmm, just so happens. one of Vickies dairy goats had to young'on's  this morning.

I can tell ya this much...DON'T GET ANY PIGNEA(sp?) goats. The things can  climb on ANYTHING!!! including the hood and roof of your car/truct

One warning, goats like the bark on tree's. If you have any tree's you don't want killed..don't fence them near them.

They are great at clearing brush, but don't think that they eat anything, like garbage, can's, Etc. They can get sick easy and don't take cold wet weather well.

If you have ant question's PM Vickie. She is a goat expert!!

This is what I found doing a search. They said that it is fairly a low maintenance animal??

STEP 1: Provide a dry shelter for goats. A good shelter for most climates is a three-sided barn with a pitched roof. Place straw or dry bedding in barn.

STEP 2: Feed goats in a clean feeder that they cannot stand in and soil feed.

STEP 3: Provide fresh water daily to goats.

STEP 4: Check hooves of goats every month and trim as needed. Clean and medicate any hoof rot areas.

STEP 5: Worm goats twice a year with a paste wormer. STEP 6: Watch for lice and dust when needed.

STEP 7: Check with local veterinarian about any shots your goat may need if you plan to drink the milk.

STEP 8: Shave goats in summer months if you live in a hot area.

You need to get you some of those "Fainting Goats" Mayfly.

When you get bored you can run up behind them and scream. They freeze cold in their tracks and tip over....OUT COLD for a couple minutes. It's hilarious to watch them do this, and it doesn't hurt the goats from what I was told.

Here are facts. I have been raising goats for 10yrs. They are realatively easy. Goats will not graze on grass unless it is weeds. They prefer weeds and pine needles. I give mine hay. I have a 3 sided shed and cattle panels all the way around about a 60x60 ft pen. Goat need to be wormed lots as they unlike other animals and can't fight parasites and can die from them. I worm 3 times in the spring with safeguard  and 2 times in the fall with ivomec. If you have them in low wet areas they can get liverflukes just like deer and can die from them so you need to use Ivomec Plus every month then. As for trimming hooves 1 -2 times a year. They will also need over eating shots every spring. If you have any questions ask away. I thought you would enjoy a picture of mom and her new babies

Worming is going to cost about 20.00 a year(up to 15 goats) overeating shots 5.00(up to 10 goats) Hay depends 1 goat needs 1/4 square bale per day. 4 days per goat 1 square bale.
Bale cost. I pay 1.50 a bay. They only need grass hay unless you are going into dairy prooduction. As for price. If you buy goats at slaughter house probably 100.00 from private party guarentee healthy animal 150.00-5000.00 on does 100.00-2500.00 on bucks for dairy goats. For Boer goats they will start higher. They are meat goats. I had 2 doe kids and they are registered and am asking 250.00 per goat. They will not loose their value you would alway get your money back at tht price.

Men do not read any further!!!!!

Vickie,  This may seem like a stupid question but when you had your goats did you castrate the billy goats :ROTFLMAO: or did you have a vet do it?  I am getting two from a friend and there is one of each.  I have cows and castrate my own calves.  I use a (men you better not be reading this) knife and then a emasculater to cut the cord and nut.  The friend said goats are real touchy/wimps and to have a vet do it.  Just wondering.

Thanks!!

Sorry
I didn't see the thread. I don't wether my buck kids get to much money for them. If the are a month or younger you can put rubber binders on. (Green cherrios) if they are older you can use the bigger binder(made for bulls) We never cut our calves just put the binders on at 2 days old. As far as cutting them I have no idea I'm sure it will only hurt a little while LOL LOL  You men have to not sqirm so much it never hurts me to put those binders on LOL LOL
