Holy cow.  We have 2 billion+ surplus and we are talking about spending that and raising taxes (if all were okayed) another 4 billion.  $6,000,000,000 in new spending in one state.  Tax increases for some or all in state income tax, license tabs, gas tax, cigarette tax, liquor tax, sales tax.  Did I miss any?

It will never get passed.  T-paw already said he's going to veto it.

He also said last session that he would veto all tax increases and he okayed "user fees".  What the h*ll is a user fee?  When the government takes your money, it's a tax.  Paying for a fishing license is a user fee.  Increasing taxes for cigarettes is NOT a "user fee".

P.S.  I haven't smoked since 1998, so this isn't a personal beef.

P.S.S.  Rather than focusing on crime, huge spending increases, over taxation, the war/terrorism locally, etc, they are worried about spending increases, tax increases, and statewide smoking bans.  Unreal.  Minnesota handed them the key and they are opening all doors.  Scary.

Heck!  If they REALLY wanted to focus on crime-have them look in the mirror!  It'd be a start! >:D

If Taxes are going to go up, lets hope atleast part of the increase goes to dedictated funding for our natural resourses.

I'm not against some tax increases, what I am agianst is the very wealthy hiding their incomes, moving money's to off shore banks, in other words..beating the system

I would be in favor of a FLAT TAX across the board. Then everbody would pay the same % of their income into taxes.

Right now, the more you make, the less % of your income you pay in towards taxes..with all the write off's the wealthy can and do use.

 Nothing worse than someone driving a Lexus, living on Lake Minatonka and b1tching about how tough they have it, with their taxes. CRY ME A RIVER!! ::violin:; ::violin:; ::violin:;

I wonder what that % should be.  I just did my taxes and the breakdown went like this:

16.6% Fed
6.5% State

on top on that

7.65% Social security (which I probably won't get so add in another 10% for my 401K)

That 40% gone before property tax (which represents 3% of my income) cig tax, liquor tax, gas tax and every other tax this state hits you up for.

My guess is now I'm closing in on 50%.  Oh ya, I also need to pay health insurance, life insurance, homeowners insurance, auto insurance.

Damn, I haven't even made my mortgage payment, light bill, put gas in my car, paid the heat bill, electric bill or phone bill.

Jeez and to think the wife wants me to take her to Hawaii this year.  I just want enough left over to buy some leeches and go fishing this summer.
My initial response was to sue her for defamation of character, but then I realized that I had no character.

Harold:

Amen.  My wife and talk about this all the time.  If you really think about it's amazing how much of your income goes to the man and how little he leaves you.

Bottom line is, middle class or rich, we all are extremely overtaxed.  They are going to take the 2.1 BILLION dollar surplus and spend it all, and on top of it add another 1+ BILLION dollars in new taxes and spend that on God knows what.  I don't recall the exact number, but the top 20% (or so) of wage earners in Minnesota pay something like 60 or 70% of all of the state income tax already.  The bottom 20% or so of all wage earners pay zero state income taxes.  Check my numbers if you know a good source.  They are close from memory.  I think we are all burdened enough.  Do I feel sorry for the rich...nope.  But heck, where's the end.  The taxman (woman) is prospering with over taxation already.  The thought of spending the surplus and on top of it raising taxes in assinine.  The Republicans were horrible during their tenure in power, and now the Democrats are proving to be just as bad (or even worse).  So who's looking out for us and representing Minnesotans fairly?  NOBODY!!
