After Justyn Johnson canoed the Minnesota River last summer, he had no concrete plans for another trip, but the spirit of adventure had caught hold of him.

Saturday, Justyn and four friends slipped their kayaks into the Mississippi at Gulsvig Landing where the shallow river weaves through a tangle of brown grasses and the only sign of spring was a red-winged blackbird perched on a cattail.

Three others in the party plan a two-week foray, hoping to reach the Minnesota border before they head back to their lives in the Brandon-Evansville area, near Alexandria. But Justyn and friend Brian LaMay plan to keep paddling, all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.

Off to a cold, windy start, five young men from the Evansville area, near Alexandria, headed up the Mississippi River to Bemidji from Gulsvig Landing.

Before the send-off, Justyn, his parents Donn and Mary Johnson of Alexandria, and cousin Pauline Eilers of Park Rapids, and friends and relatives of the other adventurers had a hearty breakfast at the West Forty in Park Rapids.

Justyn said he and his friends began planning the trip right after New Year?s. "I already had the gear so I didn't have to buy much," he said.

Planning included figuring out where the locks and dams are. Portages, camping sites and other information about the Upper Mississippi to Hastings are well marked on a map he got from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Mary had it laminated for him to take along.

Freeze-dried and vacuum-packed meals and granola bars will sustain the burley young man. Justyn lost 35 pounds in 23 days when he canoed the Minnesota River. He has gained 20 pounds since and expects to lose even more weight this time, eating only once a day.

Water is a bigger issue, he said. It was hot when he made the trip on the Minnesota River and one day, apparently because he didn't drink enough water, he started hallucinating. "I could see the bottom of the river five or six feet down, but the paddle wouldn't seem to go all the way into the water," he said.

This time he will know better, and can help his friends also. He carries a water purifier. The purifier kills microorganisms so it will work on the Upper Mississippi, but farther down where there may be chemicals in the water, he isn't so sure he'll want to drink it.

With a friend along this time, they may take turns guarding their kayaks and gear and going on land to buy water and other supplies. Otherwise, he said, "you have to try to hide your stuff, cover it with a tarp or something and hope it's there when you get back."

The only other obstacles Justyn anticipates are some rapids, turbulence from barges and tug boats and possibly snakes and alligators.

But that's the downside. "The best part is taking a two-month vacation." he said, but he's excited about the adventure of camping on sandbars, seeing spring unfold in the north country and spotting wildlife. "I'm looking forward to seeing lady slippers, otters, eagles and bears. Hopefully, they'll stay out of our food," Justyn said.

A camper since he was young, he knows about hiding food from black bears and how to stay dry.

Justyn and his family camped regularly at Lake 21 in the Paul Bunyan State Forest and at Itasca State Park. He even heads north for camping in winter.

A welder, Justyn said, "I have no mortgage and no dog, so I'm free to go."

He will make one side trip this month. His sister, Lindsey, is getting married May 18 in Glenwood. So someone is going to pick him up, take him to the wedding and return him to the river while the others wait. They hope to be south of Fort Snelling by then.

He'll also celebrate his 29th birthday June 1, keeping a calendar in his head, but not time. Grinning, he said, "I'm not wearing a watch because there's no need to know what time it is."

All the kayakers have cell phones, which they'll turn off most of the time. Justyn said on his previous trip, he plugged in his charger into electrical outlets at campgrounds or at C-stores. "People were very good about it," he said.

Mary said she's not too worried. "He's pretty cautious and will always be aware of his surroundings."

"I will always be safe," Justyn added, grinning. "It will be fun."

It took Justyn 23 days to paddle the 327 miles of the Minnesota River from Big Stone Lake near Ortonville to Fort Snelling, and he thinks it will take a full two months to reach the Gulf of Mexico.

The Friday night before he left, Justyn spent four hours arranging and re-arranging his gear, making sure he had everything he would need for the journey.

For mental preparation, Justyn read "Canoeing with the Cree," Eric Sevareid's classic on a canoe trip he and Walter Port made from Fort Snelling to Hudson Bay in a canvas canoe in 1930.

"They had it a lot harder," Justyn said, "but they turned out to be great men."

The group left Saturday shortly after noon.  At the time of their departure, the sky's were gray, but no rain.  But it didn't take long for the rains to catch up with them.  IT rained pretty much the rest of the afternoon into the night.  Sunday they fought the strong winds nearly everyone experienced.  By Sunday night they had traveled approximately 35 miles down river.   The came across a shelter with a picnic table, and camped out next to that for the night.

As of Wednesday May 9th, they had crossed Cass Lake and hoped to reach the inlet to Winnibigosh (Big Winnie) by nightfall.  That's all I have for now.  More to come soon!

May 12 Mississippi River Update

Hello Everyone:  Donn and I traveled up to Grand Rapids to exchange a kayak with Justyn and to see the men and of course, bring some lunch.  They arrived at the Pokegama government dam around noon.  It was good to see them.  They looked good.  A few were a little sunburned, some were sporting the good ol' sunglass tan lines, and they were ready for some "real" food.

We decided to bring "healthy" food and they seemed to enjoy it all.  The apples, oranges, yogurt, bananas, gatorade and sub sandwiches and of course homemade choc chip cookies were a hit.

There is a 6 block portage in Grand Rapids so tomorrow they can call a taxi service that will bring out a vehicle and trailer and haul the boys to the other side of the dam.  The Blandin Paper Mill pays for this service, isn't that nice?

After lunch, we met up with Justyn's great aunt, Suzann Nelson and the boys were live on the local radio station and talked about their trip.  They all had something to offer.  Then we went to the drug store and bought some very needed supplies.  Justyn is suffering from some terrible fissures on his hands that need urgent care and Tony's tennis elbow is acting up.  Then we went to a sporting outlet store for a few more supplies.  Back to the lake and then we headed home.  The boys were going to stay the night and were pretty excited that they had "showers" there.  They did shower in the lake a few days ago, but they all said it was  COLD.

The highlight so far seemed to be getting across Lake Winnie.  I think they were all very glad to have that behind them.  Brian said the waves got to be quite challenging.  Justyn and Matt went across when the wind was coming from the south, so they did not have much of a problem.  The others bucked some good waves.

They said they have seen a few deer, lots of porcupines, a snapping turtle and lots of ducks.  The weather has been good so far, but they might get some rain late tonight and tomorrow.  I bet they sleep good tonight.  They were bucking the wind today and you could tell they were a little fatigued.  They can rest up for a day.

I have attached a few pictures from today.  I hope you enjoy them.

(Justyn's parents)

The entire length of the Mississippi?

Sounds like a lot of extra work. For the price of a good kayake you could get round trip tickets and be there in a couple hours.

I have always wanted to make the Hastings (my hometown) to New Orleans trip except in a power boat.  It is kind of one of those 'lifelong' goals.  One that I hope come to fruition!!

The thought of spending 2 months in a tiny boat barely big enough to sit down in hasn't been my life long dream.
Two months on a 150 foot luxury yacht with a couple of the worlds top Supermodels would be more my thing.  >:D  ::dancinred::

While I'd LOVE to kick back on the SS Bunny with some of Hef's finest-I know that'll never happen.  And to be totally realistic, now that I have a family, I'll never get to take the trip these guys are taking either.  But I have a pretty good imagination, and by reading their updates, and seeing the pictures of their trip-I will do the next best thing, live this trip through them.   ::rockon::

I'm glad and proud to know Digger & Brian, and to be able to share their adventures with everyone here at MNO.  I know this may not be some people's idea of fun-but obviously there is enough interest-so I'll keep posting updates as they come in.

Wednesday May 16th Update

Justyn aka "Digger" will be coming home briefly on Thursday night.  His sister is getting married on Friday, and that is something he simply would not miss!  Sat. morning he'll return where he left off, and continue his journey with the rest of the gang.  As of tonight, they are just north of Aitkin, MN.

As mentioned in a previous update, he had to have is Kayak replaced with one that had a bigger cockpit.  His legs were cramping up pretty severely in his other Kayak.  The extra room seems to have helped greatly!  Also the fissures on his hands are getting better.  Other than that-things have been going quite well for the group.

I hope to have a more in depth report to share on Sunday or early next week.

Monday, May 21st Update:

Justyn made it home breifly for his sister's wedding on Friday night.  He was back on the river by 11 am Saturday.  He had 21 miles to paddle in order to catch up with the rest of the group.  He caught up with them Saturday night, and they continued their voyage on Sunday towards the Twin Cities.  They hope to be there within a week.

Although it isn't clear right now, but 2 or 3 of the group may be ending their portion of the trip once they reach Minneapolis.  That's all I have for now.

And the saga continues...  ::popcorn::

The original plan was always for Justyn and Brian to make the full trek to New Orleans.  The other 3 are along for the first 2-3 weeks of the trip, summer vacation if you will.  ::dancinred::

Guythathunts-I'm not 100% sure when they'll be through St. Cloud, but they left Brainerd on Sunday.  And they put on approximately 20 miles or so a day.  So my guess would be Tuesday-Thursday (May 22-25th).  I wished I could give a definitive answer.  I also thought it would be cool to meet up with them somewhere, hang a banner from a bridge (illegal I believe)  :whistling: , and feed them a "home cooked" meal.  In fact, Sadieelmer-a member here on MNO- and I have been talking of doing something like that once they are out of state.

*A side note:

They have "support" through Minnesota, but after that they are pretty much on their own.  By support I mean, Justyn's parents meeting up with them (or any of their parents) and feeding them a large meal, and replentishing their supplies.  One might say the Minnesota leg of the trip is a test of their endurance, and maintaining their sanity.
This way, they should have any "bugs" worked out by then, and will be prepared for the rest of the trip.  An example: Justyn needed to swap Kayaks as the one he started out on caused cramping-lack of leg room.

I encourage anyone who wishes to, to keep their eyes open for them on the river-and by all means flag them down and let them know you are not only rooting for them, but following along with their adventure's on MNO.  I know they'd appreciate that!  ::rockon::

I hope to have pictures and a copy of their journal once they reach Minneapolis.  Originally we had planned on photo/journal updates every 2-3 weeks, but I think that 3-4 weeks would be more realistic.  I promise you this, as soon as I get an update-I will be sure to pass it along here on MNO.  Justyn's mom and I was working together to keep everyone updated-and I would like to take a moment to thank her for all her hard work on this.   ::cheers::
