Help Please?  Okay, here's the deal.  I have never really liked dogs, but I want to get a hunting dog with spirit but not a hyper dog and I don't want some huge dog either.  Anyways, I had about given up, when I went on my Georgia turkey hunt a couple weeks ago and our host had these two really great little dogs... from the same litter but they look very different in color, but not in shape and size.  They were just all over me and I bonded with one of them instantly... never happened before with a dog.

Anyways, I was told that one of the parents was a Jack Russell terrier and that the other MIGHT have been an Australian Cattle dog or shepherd, but I doubt the shepherd because I looked at that breed on line and these dogs just don't look like that breed.

So, I am on a mission here.  These dogs are about 30-35 pounds, a bit over knee high.. the owner says that they are great little hunters, yet not hyper like Jack Russells tend to be.

Any help you all can give me would be great.  Now I just need to figure how to post a photo....

you are trying to find out what kind of dog a mixed breed dog is?
are you just trying to identify what two types of dog created this mixed breed?

It's tough to tell from that pic, but it does loook like it was mixed with a herding breed, maybe a Border Collie. I think Aussie Shepards can also have that black/white coloring.

Border Collie and I can't figure out the other (possibly springer?).  The back quarters has similar shape to our black "labs".

Are you positive both pups had the same father.  The black and white one looks just like a border collie/australian shepard mix I had as a kid and the other looks like a australian shepard mix.

One parent was a purebread Jack Russell terrier.. that is known for sure.  The other parent... is the unknown.  The dog's owner guessed the other parent to be an Austrailian Sherpher or Aussie Cattle Dog.  When I looked at the two Aussie breeds, it didn't look like it.  Both dogs, the Brindle and the Black and White came from the same litter from the sames parents.  They were bought together.,

Jack Russell terriers are white, black and brown according to AKC photos and specs.  I think that is where the black and white comes from.  Brindle is not an acceptable coloring in judging Jack Rusell terriers.  I'm thinking the black and white color of one dog comes from the JR terrier and the brindle of the other dog comes from the other parent.
The mystery continues.  :-)

Genetics are a funny thing and these 2 dogs definetely have same features. Being a mixed breed color can be any combo. My first guess would be a Blue Lacy. Check out the thread www.dogbreedinfo.com/bluelacy.htm

I have personally been around a blue lacy and they are a wonderful easy going dog.
 2 nd guess
Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog
www.dogbreedinfo.com/stumpytailcattledog.htm
When all else fails you can have a DNA done and they will tell you exactly what parentage the dogs have. This is fairly new procedure.

Same litter doesn't mean same father.

you are so right jomzak.
a bitch can take to more than one male in the same cycle.
that would be my first guess.
I have seen a very similar color combination on different litters before, as the grey and black one.
this litter was inbred. not saying that this is the case at all. I just know the situation those ones came from.
Catwoman, say you could figure out what the breed was. what would you do then?
go get yourself one of each and breed them and then keep a pup?
look for someone who was willing to perform this breding with their own dogs for you?
Even if, you could somehow create a pup from the same types of breeds as you are searching for, this in now way means you are going to have a dog with the same personality as the one you have seen.
temperaments can vary greatly from pup to pup within the same litter.
we have bred chesapeake bay retrievers for fifteen years and I don't think we have thrown the same personality once.
dogs are very much like people that way.
every one is different in their own way.
I hope you can find what you are searching for.

Aw gee, I forgot how naughty doggies can me.  sigh.  the owner told me for sure the parents were from the same animals.  That's all I know.  It did not occur to me, since I've not really owned dogs before, that the mother dog could be a floozy.  :-)

Neither of the dogs I saw has the floppy ears like the blue lacy.  I think you hit the nail on the head with the Austrailian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog however!!! The dogs I saw both look very much like the Cattle Dog, but they both had the longer tails like the Jacks.  BINGO!  I think we have the breeds id'd.  The stumpy is definately one parent, and I know the other is a Jack Russell.  NOW THE TRICK is to find a way to get these two bred into one critter.  Hmmmmm.

Hate to tell you CW, but the pooches have been figuring out that one for a good long while.  They haven't needed a whole lot of human intervention either.  In fact, it seems they are pretty adept at the process....

Wellllll.... I can't go breeding dogs living in the middle of suburbia and working two jobs.  I will have to wait till I can move more rural... I may have to buy one of each breed and just take care of business myself.  Meanwhile, if anyone out there has this dog mix, stumpy tail and Jack Russell... I sure would like to have one... maybe even two.  :-)
