Im sure many of you get the program catalogs from your local community right?  Well this time White Bear Lake's has one I've never seen before.  Its called "Deer Cutting For Dummies"  -- its a deer butchering class.  I was just telling my wife how I wanted to learn to do this for myself and here it presents itself.  I will be registering for this class Monday morning for sure.

Here's the class description:
Avoid the extra expense of paying a butcher shop to process your deer this fall.  SwenDell Deer will take you through the entire process from field to freezer, including how to cut chops, roasts, trim for ground venison, and tips on making sausage.  This is a demonstrative/hands on class; a deer will be field dressed and cut so dress accordingly.  Class includes a reference book.  Cutting supplies will be available for optional purchase.

This class will take place at a residence in Hugo.  The address and a map will be made available several days before the class.

Kerry Swendsen and Wendell Ball have been in the meat business for at lest 10 years.  THey have also either processed deer for people, themselves, or for another deer processor.

1580.100 Tue Oct 9, 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm  $39.00

Must be 18 years old or older.

If you or anyone you know is interested here's a link to register and pay on line:  http://www.active.com/search/org_browse.cfm?org=whitebear

Otherwise you could mail it in to:
Community Services
4855 Bloom Ave
White Bear Lake, MN 55110

OR fax it to (651)407-7502

Or do a Walk In registration at the Community Services Office at the White Bear Lake School District Center -- ROOM 106 at 4855 Bloom Ave in White Bear Lake.  It is adjacent to Central Middle School.  Open weekdays 7:30 am- 4:30 pm.  There is also an after hours drop box by the office door.  Please us a sealed envelope for the drop box.

If anyone plans to go, let me know and we can share notes, ride together, help each other with our deer butchering this season...  ::cheers:: ::dancinred::

This sounds like a great class to plug into for anyone interested in saving some money on their processing fees and just to have the general knowledge as well. My Dad worked at Hormel's in Austin for 20+ years so I grew up learning how to do the butchering each deer camp. It has saved us alot of money over the years. We would butcher the deer, cut out the butterfly chops, steaks and keep some of the trimmin's for jerky and then just take the rest of the trimmin's in to be made into snack sticks, ring bologna or summer sausage at our local butcher's shop. With 3-4 of us working together we could easily skin and butcher 4-6 deer in an afternoon/evening after deer camp.

Well I took the butchering class last night and it went real well.  There were 2 experienced butchers teaching the class and boy howdy do they know their stuff.  Lots of fun and laughs along the way too.  I bet they could actually cut up a deer in about 1/2 an hour but we spend about 2 learnig.  I'll be butchering my own deer this year that's for sure.

Now this class isn't a one time thing.  They have other classes coming up in other towns so if anyone is interested, let me know here, by PM, or email and I'll call them and get the info for you.

Here's one more thing I found very interesting.  They use road-kill deer for the classes.  Its great to use the road-kill deer so that those deer don't die in vane.  I truly respect the life God gave them and thank God that I was given the chance to learn that way.

I don't think I could be more excited for deer season even if a deer walked right up to me and said "TAKE ME GRUTE!  TAKE ME IM YOURS."

Grute do you know what other towns they are teaching this class in? Is it mainly in the Twin Cities area?

Thanks

I called him and here's his up coming schedule.  Just go to community Ed for the city you're interested in to register for it.

Osseo - Tonight 10/10 (maybe call community ed to see if you can get in)
Anoka - Sat 10/13
Spring Lake Park - 10/15
Prior Lake - 10/18
Columbia Heights - 10/22
Hastings - 10/23
Fridley - 10/24
North St Paul - 10/25

Even if this isn't right in your town or a neighboring town, it would be worth a drive.  Think of all the $$ you'll save cutting your own meat.

Grute:  I might have to call North St. Paul to see if they have openings.  Years ago in So. Dak we did the butchering in the garage and cut the steaks and roasts and did hamburger.  Seems like many years ago though and a refresher course never hurts.  Thanks for the info. Also hopefully some deer fall in Nov. at the cabin!!! ::cheers::

Yeah I'd reccomend this class to anyone.  The guys running it love what they do and it shows.

God willing we get some deer up at Rog's this Nov, I'll be glad to help you out all the way.

Cheers Buddy.  ::cheers::
