I was wondering the same thing. Maybe a barbed fence?? I was told by someone that if a male deer gets injured on a particular side of his body that it may effect the antler growth on that side of the body for either that year or the remainder of his life.

I also watched him in a sparring match with a little 4 pointer so I was guessing that he may have tangled with something bigger and got the scratches but I don't know for sure.
