It's a great time of the year to see all the birds coming back through. There was a male rose-breasted grosbeak at the sunflower feeder this morning and my Mom just called to say she also had one. She also had her first oriole show up too so it's time to get out the grape jelly, sugar water and orange slices over my direction I reckon.

Never seen one in person but looks like a wayward western tanager. My Mom may have seen one earlier this week but thought it possibly was a European goldfinch. Not sure her older Peterson Eastern bird guide had the western tanager included.

Saw a male Gold Finch at the feeder. Don and Brian don't cry your eyes out  after vewing my photos. If you do it won't be from envy. Anyhow that's the best shot I could get through the screen door with a regular lense. If I opened the door to get closer he would fly away. Anyhow, that's my story and I'm stickin to it.  :doah:

Hey thanks for showing that picture.  I was wondering what a bird feeder looked like.  I have those too but I call them Bait Stations.

Saw the first indigo bunting of the season here on the thistle feeder this morning. Made my day after not seeing any last year. When the sun catches them, they are spectacular.  :party1:

Wow! Goldfinches must've had an awesome reproductive season. Their numbers have about doubled and lots of them are youngsters being fed by the adults. Hummingbirds are numerous and keep the flowers and feeders busy. Always on the move, sorta like me.  :bs:

Lots of hummingbirds here.  Not much at the bird feeder but then I haven't put in bird seed for a couple months now.  I feed mostly in winter and spring.  I figure there's abundent food during the summer and fall.

I try to get out once squirrel hunting every fall when I get the chance. They really are tasty grilled up. I have to eat them when the wife isn't around though; she thinks it's gross. Just more for me that way! I see there are two nice big fox squirrels hanging around the feeders lately. Hmmm...maybe if I use the pellet gun she won't hear the shots.

Looks like the hummingbirds have thrown in the towel for the season. Have seen no evidence they've been here for almost 2 weeks. Anyone else still seeing them yet? Time to replace the nectar feeders with the suet feeders. Think I remember putting some suet in the freezer part of the beer refrigerator in the garage. Now, if I can get past the beer I might have a chance of finding it!

Many Cardinals, House Finches, Mourning Doves, Blue Jays, Downy Woodpeckers, Juncos, and of course Sparrows.  Those wretched squirrels seem to keep coming back from the dead too.  Haven't seen the Pileated Woodpeckers this fall yet.

Yesterday I put some dry cat food pellets out for a stray cat that visits daily. When the cat left after eating, a blue jay swooped down and started eating the leftovers. Our blue jays also have a habit picking up peanuts in the shell off the top of the BBQ grill. They take them and hide them in the forks of the tree branches and return for more. If you don't put any more out for them, then they start squawking.

We haven't seen many of our small woodpeckers this year, but I managed to catch one feeding the other day.

Obviously my photos were taken from inside the house so the quality is not the finest.

I certainly don't mind the shots through the windows. That's the way we see most of the birds here too only our windows are dirtier! The activity here since the snow has been fast and furious. Finches, both house and goldfinches are back to eating thistle seed like there's no tomorrow. Interesting to hear about your cat food hiding blue jays. They do the same here with kernels of corn. Between the jays and the squirrels, am fearing the backyard will look like a corn field next spring.

I was at my parents place in West Central MN this weekend.  Mom had a lot of Flickers and Cardinals.  Also several other interesting birds.  Can you identify the bird in the last picture?
