I'm taking my girlfirend on her first Pheasant hunting trip this weekend, and what her to  really enjoy her first trip and get on some birds, and watch the dog hunt. I hear the Wilson, Ortonville, and Storden areas are really good this year. I'd rather not hunt around our area ( Mankato) it's been ok but a lot of pressure and the numbers are not as good as western Minnesota. If anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be great. I'm not here to take anyones "good" areas, just want a bit of direction. Thanks, and good hunting

There is not a bad area in Western or S Western Mn right now, just pick a spot in the areas that you suggested and you'll find a ton of birds.

Keep in mind that Deer Firearms opener is this Saturday, you'll be competing with thousands of hunters on public land all weekend. Watch your dog closely too, I would never bring my dog pheasant hunting on opening weekend for deer, let alone being in the woods or fields myself.

Good luck!

I was told this sort of thing by a ton of people. It was a few years ago and I was not deer hunting on Deer Opener so I decided to take my gf out west to chase some birds. It turned out to be an awesome weekend!! Sure there were deer hunters out but didn't run into a single pheasant hunter!!! We had the whole place to ourselves. The deer hunters semed to be in the woods in the morning before we could even hunt and then I am not sure what they do all day but saw very few. We had no problems and ran into noone really. What a great weekend to go.

I will pm you some spots.....later tonight.

Go to Sportman's Warehouse, they have maps of public hunting land in Minnesota.  I would just pick somewhere out west and give it a shot, you'll have some luck. ;D

I know it's Deer opener, as well, but the way our work weekends and having her two kids, this is a good weekend for us.the times I have been out around here , I've never had a problem, but we have the river bottom to keep the Big game guys out of the WMA's. My friend told me tonight, that most of the WMA's out where he has been have deer stands on all the priviate land next to them, and the locals said most of the people are leaseing the stands out. Makes me kind of nervous.I wonder if its worth the drive to try to find a few spots and do some ditch hunting. Thanks for your input so far guys, Have a great hunting season
