How well do deer calls work or how well do they work in the woods where no fields are present. Deer are around  but in the woods you don't see much until they're there. If they do work what kinds and how do you use them?

I have used my grunt tube to call several deer in - Both big and small. Just make sure you pay attention to the wind as I have noticed they usually come in from the downwind side. I have tried rattling but not near the amount of success.

What kind of woods are you hunting? I hunt northern Minnesota where it is all woods and no fields. A deer grunt has worked for me in various types of timber from open birch ridges to spruce thickets that offer no more than a 10-15 yard shot. Just be ready because during the rut they come quick. Good Luck.

Grunts ,bleats and rattles all work well to pique a deers curiosity to investigate you. 98 out of 100* times they will wind you and stay away without being detected.1 out of 100* times they will crash away that you can hear.A decoy can help coerce them the last seventy yards. Be cautious however during firearms season as it may also coerce an over zealous hunter to draw his attention toward you. even carrying the decoy out. It sounds dumb but a splash of orange on the decoy will do you more good than harm.

During firearms season, i will use my grunt call very sparingly, i also use my long range bleat can a little more.

I personally have not had very much sucess using any calls, i can remember about 5 years ago, I was sitting in my stand and mimmicked a tending grunt, within 10 seconds a nice 9 pointer came running down the trail all pissed off, i took him at about 60 yards. Maybe it was the call or maybe just a coincidence??? That was one of the very few deer that I have taken with any calling.

A few years before that, i took an 11 pointer while i was out of my stand, i actually was taking a 5 minute break and walked up to my camo bucket with a spinning lid on top of it, just as I pulled the lid open and it made a loud cracking noise, the 11 pointer came over the hill and was running at me.

I am now hunting from a blind when the weather is cold or windy and I've taken a few deer when i come out and use the zipper, last year I took a large doe a few seconds after the zipper opened, 3 does came walking down my path and i was just standing there in the open, i froze for about 30 seconds and the lead doe started pawing the ground at about 40 yards, once they started walking again, I took the largest one.

It's funny how i can sit in my stand for 10 hours a day, be quiet, rattle and do some limited calling and not have many opportunities, but when i make a mistake or other weird noise, they come in range.

I agree, you see all the shows with the guys useing them and the bucks come running. You have to remember they are on land were there are many bucks not on state land or your land were there are 4 bucks and 30 does. the land they hunt there is 400 bucks and 401 does.   but i have called in a couple bucks or think i have called them in....       who knows
