I thought I saw a thread where someone was looking for capes.

my son's buddy hit a nice buck last night but it had lost it's horns already.
it is a nice size animal. probably about 170 pounds.
I have the deer here and i have not yet skun it out.

if someone was looking for a nice cape, let me know before tomorrow morning.

can we say "more sausage for Jigglestick!!" :happy1:

I will take a picture in the morning.
I cut the chest cavity a little farther than I wanted to, but I think not to far for a cape.
I need to know how you want it skun.
I would it be better to leave the head and part of the neck intact and let you do the detailed work?

Yeah. Just leave about 3" of neck and the head in. Where did you cut it off at?

I havent cut it off yet. it is still whole in the garage.
we are going to skin it upside down in a few minutes.
the chest cavity wasn't split, but I accidently split the skin on the briskit, but not to far I think.
it's close. one other thing is my son hung it by the neck. I have to look it over to make sure it didnt screw anything up that way.
he didn't know.
I hope it's still usable. it's a nice size deer and it would be nice to help someone out.
one thing that is noticeable to me, is the fur seems really thick especialy on the face. I suppose winter hair.
I will be in burnsville tomorrow and the next day.
maybe fridley on christmas day.
I could bring it with and you could look it over.

Where are you at otherwise? I'm pretty busy this week but if it's not too far I'll come get it. It's really not a real big deal I have enough capes now but if mnminkman is still interested he may be closer and able to pick it up. Just let me know. Thanks.

I am north of Deer river and Grand Rapids MN.
so ...well, it's here anyways.
we have it skun and it looks ok to me.

looking at my son's sholuder mount, I think it's far back enough.
the neck looks ok too.
while I'm at it, let me tell you the screwed up story of my sons mount.
my boy shot this nice eight point three seasons ago.
five times.
he got to shots into the body, which would have done it in but he didn'tknow that, so after the first two shots, the thing is still going, so he runs out of the blind and cuts the deer off and shoots it again and it flips over backwards still very much alive, so he pops it again in the head.
this shot puts a hole in the snout about the size of a quarter or maybe a little smaller but it's sort of T shaped.
we call the taxidermy guy in town and he said bring it over he'd take a look at it.
so we did, and he did and he said that should be no problem to fix. we were very happy about that, but we told him if he couldn't fix it we could use the cape from my dad's 7 pointer he had shot.
he assured us that it would be no problem so we discarded the other hide.

he told us he would have it done by april, may at the latest.
that was cool and we could hardly wait!

well may comes and goes, then june, then july...in august I called him.
he said he had been to busy to get at it.
so I asked when and he said he wasn't sure.
something sounded funny and I was starting to get pissed and he knew it.
he tried to turn it around on us saying the wound was a difficult task and we shouldn't be pressuring him.
I called bull#$%! and demanded he give me a deadline.
he said no later than christmas.
we hung up and I was boiling mad.
I thought about it and called him back. I told him I was coming to get it and have it done elsewhere.
when I got there he was obviously uneasy.
rightfully so.
that was my son's buck he was messing with.
I brought it to another guy who agreed to do it and would get right on it.

this new guy called me a week later and told me he wouldn't be able to fix the hole.
he said that he figured out why the other guy was dragging his feet. he had cut the T shaped hole into a circle shaped hole but he had cut it to big to close up.
I guess taxidermists sometimes cut a wound hole into the shape of a foot ball to make a easier job of mending the hide.
the first guy made a mistake and was waiting for the following deer season to get another cape and then finish the job and tell us he finnished the deer without saying a word about the incident.
GRRRR!! this really pissed me off, knowing that even if the original cape was no good, we could have used Dan's grandpa's cape, which would have had a significant sentimental meaning.
now we have dan's deer on the wall, but it is with a cape from who knows where.

I am very glad there was a cape to be had to finish this mount.

Yeah a football cut is usually used but if it's just a cut and nothing is missing usually it can be fixed. The guy sounds kinda dumb to me to be honest. If you can get an extra cape I say do it then if it's not needed give it back or buy it. I'll get ahold of you wednesday or thursday and try to figure out a time to maybe meet somewhere.

Any entry hole will normally need to be opened up larger as it leaves cut or missing hair. Exit holes on the other hand can go both ways. Very small easy fix or expanded out, cut and missing hair huge.
I fixed one last year that was a exit hole from a slug on one side or the other from the nose. Entry in that spot would have meant new cape.

Don't blame you for being pissed jigglestick, the not honing up to the mistake and letting you know he would have to find another cape would of ticked me more then anything. Hate when people try to con their way out of somthing like that instead of being honest.
