Anyone get out today for the last day of the 2007 season?

How did the rest of your season go? I didn't make it out as much as i would have liked  (who does). I made one weekend trip down to Worthington in October and a few other local trips. Had some great dogwork, took some nice pics and shot my share of birds.

Waiting for next year allready! My dog will be 9 in the spring, so I'm planning on training a new GSP pup.

I was out today, hope to go tomorrow for the last day of the season if I am not mistaken.  Son bagged one, I airballed on a chip shot in the cattails.  Can't believe it is over again so soon.  It was a great year.  October 2008 can't get here soon enough.

New pheasant hunting opportunity available in metro region (December 11, 2007)

Pheasant hunting will be allowed on a portion of the Vermillion Highlands Research, Recreation and Wildlife Management Area in Dakota County from Dec. 10 through Jan. 1, 2008.

Hunting will be on a first-come first-serve basis. Designated pheasant hunting parking spaces will be available in parking lots. If a space is open, a person may park and go hunting. If all slots are occupied with vehicles, hunters must come back at another time.

Roughly the two southern sections (13 and 14) will be open for pheasant hunting. The area open to hunting is delineated with bright orange signage. Parking will be available on the east side in the parking lot off of Co. Rd. 81 (Clayton Ave.) and from the south at the end of Co. Rd. 79 (Blaine Ave.). There are five designated parking slots in the Clayton Ave. lot and three in the Blaine Ave. lot.

Vermillion Highlands Research, Recreation and Wildlife Management Area is a cooperative project of the DNR and the University of Minnesota, with input from Dakota County. The 2,840 acres of University land came under joint management as part of 2006 Legislation committing state funding for a new Gophers football stadium. A portion of the area opened for limited hunting for the first time this year.

For more information, contact a local DNR wildlife office during business hours at (651) 322-4643

We took 2 yesterday.  Don't know if we'll get out today.  It's 1 degree with a 20 mph wind right now.  Must have seen at least a hundred hens.  With any decent weather we should have an excellent year again next year.

Well, I got out today, not exactly the way I wanted the season to end, but hey, you take it as it comes right.  Went to a WPA that I thought I could make a quick walk around and stay out of the wind a little.  Have had some success there in the past and hoped to squeak one more rooster out.  Started out with the wind in my face the sun at my back and high hopes.  Well a walk was all it was.  Did not even bump a hen.  Not even a cottontail.  Dog got a little birdy a couple of times.  Weather wise, not bad, managed to work up a sweat in the cats, so exercise benefit was there at least.  Made it back to the truck, started it up and found the steering to be a little stiff, then I noticed the battery guage discharging instead of charging.  When the water temp went to hot, I checked under the hood.  I had a shredded serpentine belt and blew a hose.  Thank goodness for cell phones.  Quick call and a tow was enroute. Duey enjoyed the flatbed ride back to town.  Got dropped off at the house, truck to the shop. Now the waiting game starts for the next season.  But overall a fantastic season.  Will have to start a thread later about all of our adventures in the 07 season.

Does anyone else wish the season shifted 1 month ? It seems I don't have enough time on the frontend, but have plenty of time now.My season ended up with me missing too many birds again. But my dog Hank has finally started to slow down and work the areas instead of just busting through them.We went out last evening in the backyard and couldn't get anything up,but as I look out the window now I just counted 7 roosters and 19 hens.I guess I'll have to go talk to the neighbor next year.Hopefully the fish house gets out soon as I have the week off and am running out of things to fix around the house, and THE WIFE is off this week also.I never realized one woman could drive a guy so nuts!Have a good New Year everyone. Chris.

Hey, just thinking about a pup gets me going. Do you have a breeding/litter all picked out or is the pick as you find em?

Octobers are too far apart

Nothing yet, finding a smaller tick GSP is not gonna be easy. I know of a few kennels but it will depend on there litters.

I always find this time of year to be most depressing... Drummer lays on his rug by the gun cabinette with a bummed look on his face...My strap-vest still hangs behind the seat of my truck full of shells, my bird huntin bag overflowing with the tools of the trade...maps, e-collar, shell boxes, gloves etc. sits in denial by my door.  A stack of Upland Journal and RGS magazines sit on my nightstand and in the bathroom(way better than readers digest...)  Man...its just hard to let go, aint it?  I'll talk myself into doing the final end of the year gun scrubbing...if I can bring myself to finally do it.  My year end asessment....Grouse #'s were up, a little.  Judging from my wingshooting...My Setter will disown me.  If by chance he dosent, this fall will be Drummer's third hunting season, and he performed better than any of my bird dogs before him.  Next fall just cant come soon enough! :banghead:  Anyway... here's to next years birds, and the pursuit of em... :toast:         -thunderpout :happy1:
