i read the rocky reef report to night and john said that the nets where full of walleyes .......now maybe that means there are a lot of walleyes out there this year ......or maybe not they just got lucky and got them all ..........just think how good the fishing would be out there if thousands and thousands of pounds of walleyes where not netted out of the lake right at sponging time.........

first off, this is a federal issue. this is a reservation boundry issue not a state boundry issue, that is why the wisconsin bands can come to minnesota and net, minnesota bands can also go to wisconsin and net.  the natives bring all their own wardens to watch over the netting, mn wardens have nothing to very little to do with the netting. mn has a creel census person on site recording weights to keep track for the state.  the state puts out it's recommendations every spring, but the natives set their poundage figures as they see fit. most of the netters here on mille lacs are from wisconsin, what happens to those fish after being taken back to wisconsin is anybodys guess. one thing for sure, they CAN NOT be sold as walleye dinners at any of the casinos. i would not be surprised to find out that some are sold out of trunks of cars. until the federal changes, there is NOTHING that can be done to prevent the netting. as much as i don't like it, the only thing we can do is sit back and watch, and if you see something going on that is against the rules, report it. i know it is not what everybody wants to hear, but until the federal laws change, there is nothing that can legally be done.

what would be really interesting... and would be a great piece of investigative journalism, would be to trail these tribe members back to Wi. and see what really happens to the fish.

think about that when youre at a resturant next time, sucking down a nice big plate sized walleye fillet.

Let me know when hell freezes over, that will be the day youll see me eating a walleye that I had to pay for to be cooked at restaurant.

I agree with Chris, I won't buy a walleye dinner. Seafood, yes, fresh water fish, I eat what I catch.

as a white man, tournament fisherman for years.   put your rods, fish stores, and bull shi_ a side.   we gave the Indians the worst place to live in america and thats not enough for us.  they get a few weeks a year to net omg. o my god.  the dnr took 100,000s plus spawning walleye to other lakes and there spawn. and we say the dam indians.  sit back  take 20 min of info find the facts.

my 2 cents

hows it the worst place in america? the only tribe that doesnt get anything is red lake if im not mistaken. the mille lacs tribe has the casino which they make a ton of money from and dont pay no taxes, they get to do as they please and live by there own laws, same with mystic lake casino they live by there own laws get lots of money for doing nothing and pay no taxes on it. hows that so bad??? i would take that life anyday.............. the dnr took those to help out the lakes in mn to better our fishing for everyone the indians take it for profit for themselves, how does that compare at all?

some of your facts are off.  the casino's only benefit something 15% of the tribes. they pay taxes just not state taxes (thanks to humphrey's negotiations with them when the casino's first started). the feds have jurisdiction over them so they don't get to rape and plunder.  not to mention the years of mis-dealings with the US gov. small pox's rotten beef and the unlawful way we took the blackhills from em when the word got out that gold was there. stephen ambrose wrote some very good books on this that helps explain the way things were and the hows and whys.  I would like to find out just what the indians lobbyist do and who they pay. I'm guessing a state run casino down on harriet island would fix most of our tax issues.

I always hate seeing that story, does make ya sick.  :puke:

Found this one from last year as well. This is what happens to tourist towns that rely on this resource. If you rape it, it won't last.

Well, the tribes (all 8) are winding down their operation,as of yesterday they still had netts at wealthwood and myrmar and tallied 100,000lbs of walleye and 7500lbs of pike,no numbers of jumbo's just "alot" as they spawn after the walleyes.
