Alright you bowhunting freaks,

I'm gonna have a little competition to help you pass the time in the hunting off season.  Since it's about the right time of year to do so, let's go shed hunting.  Post a pic of your shed(s) from THIS YEAR on MNO in this forum and be in contention to win a $100 gift certificate from Minnesota Archery in Litchfield.  The sheds do not have to be massive, I'm just lookin for some good pics.  The winner will be decided at random Wednesday, April 30th.  So get your long underwear on and get your butts out in the woods!   :moose:

Sounds like a plan!! Do we have to have something in the pic to prove that it is from this year???

This should be fun!

Speaking of shed hunting.....

Yesterday we did an annual thing here as Elmer and I went our shed hunting. We have been doing this for many years and Elmer actually taught both Chuck and I how to do it right. Chuck was busy getting ready for the Maple season so I rode shotgun with Elmer. First thing we did was go to Amy's and bought a couple of the super loose meat sandwiches and some dipping sauce. A thermos of milk and a box of thin mints that Elmer provided. Funny Emer had cookies at the card game on Saturday and I don't remember seeing any of them in his order. Well anyway a few good cigars were added and we were off shed hunting. We took the North road out and around the lake. Looking and hunting for sheds, saw a few old ones but they were the same ones that we found last year. We were looking for new bigger sheds. Time when quickly as we just rolled down the road at an idle. With the snow going down and the banks getting smaller looking was not to bad. This is always the best time of the year to do this as later when the grass starts growing and leaves get on the trees it is hard to spot a good shed unless you are right on top of them.

After eating our sandwiches and another stop to down the cookies and milk we put flame to the cigars and rolled the windows down. It was getting around dusk when we saw a huge shed, this years I am sure. It was on the other side of a ditch so we had to drive around and come in from the other side. It was even wider then what we first thought. Sticking at the edge of a  corn field with snow pushed up against it. A deep brown with just a tint of gray along the edges. A fine looking shed it was. I wonder who owned it. I did not see anyone around. Who would build a shed out here along the edge of a corn field. O well we took a picture of it and decide to call it an afternoon, a fine shed would grace the walls of the ice house next year.   From Lake Iwanttobethere

Saturday my neighbor saw the two big bucks that were around here and disappeared when the bow season started. I thought they were poached off. Both Still were carrying their antlers. I need time.

I don't know what all the fuss is about, I found this beauty next to the barn. It wasn't hard to find, it's been there awhile, you can tell cause of the gray color.

Mostly just walki'in around the farm, It does help that I got several food plots too.

Last year I found over 20 antlers, this year, I haven't gone out much, (been fish'in to much) these were laying with in 50 yards of my clover and alfalfa plot, I'm sure I'll find more once the snow melts down.

well i try to get out as much as possible, and alot of the ones i find are within 100 yards of my stand, when i walking the cornfields i take the dog with me, because he usually kicks up a couple of roosters, we have some food plots around the farm but they are by the other guides deer stands and i dont like going by them just to above any possible problems. and now with all this new snow that we got last night it halts all my shed hunting/ :banghead:

Sounds like it's gonna be a great week to kick around in the wood......As long as you have a pair of hip waders to trudge through the slop!

I have looked twice and it seems like there is WAY to much area to cover to actually find anything!!!!  I understand that they will fall off where the deer are but by my house they are everywhere!!  I am talking 800 acres +.  Is there any one spot that anyone would recomend to help narrow the search???

Thanks Jewel!

I am determined to find one!!!

Probably the easiest place is bedding areas and trails that lead to bedding areas. Also along trails that have heavy cover.

Open fields can have antlers too, but they are harder to find because they can drop them anywhere.

I'd concentrate on the bedding areas and close by. I'm sure you will find your first shed if you walk very slowly and pay attention to everything within 10 yards of you.

This is the time you want to be out, now and for the next 3 weeks or so. You'll know more about your area than i do, do you still see bucks with there antlers or have they started losing them?

My area is just now starting, prime time should be in 10 days or so.

I'm sure it was too early when you tried last week.

Thanks Pat!!!  Right by my house I really only see does and fawns after the rut starts.  The bucks tend to be deeper in the woods.  But I have not seen anything with horns for over a month.  I will keep looking and will have time this weekend.

Thanks!!
