My father in law just sent me some pics of some nice sheds he found in his backyard this week. They were about 150 yards apart from each other when he found them.

I went on Sunday for my first shed hunt.  All this talk on MNO, I figured if they can find them so can I.  Well I snowmobiled to our farm and cruised around the edge of the woods looking for a larger trail to follow.  Thought "If deer are walking here maybe their horns fell off their also"

So I passed one up and then found another that went into a swampy area by my sisters deer stand.  I got off my sled and proceded in on foot.  For the first 200 yards it was a nice winding trail. Once I got to the swamp all of a sudden two trails came together.  I was thinking this is the biggest deer trail I have ever seen!!!  I went about 100 more yards and noticed some animal droppings in the trail but they were not deer or anything like it.  Moose crossed my mind but I have never seen or heard of moose being in that area.  So being the inquisitive one I picked it up and yes it was some kind of fecies but it was huge!!!

For some strange reason I then started invisiong Big Foot living in the woods and I kindof freeked for a mn. (There are tons of Timber Wolves in the area and I find myself out in the woods and not even thinking about it till it's to late and I have no gun!!)  So I decided to head back to my snowmobile where I felt safe.

Once there I went across the field and towards the house where I noticed another large trail and lo and behold more poop????  My mind at this point is just going crazy!!!  What is living in our forest????

Then the light came on, wait did my sister not say they went riding horse the other day!!!  Yea I am soooo dumb, I came across their horse trail in the woods.  Must of killed way to many brain cells at Eel Pout!!!

Shed outing #1, no horns but lots of horse poop!!!

My father in law lives down in the NW Des Moines area and his back yard butts up against an undeveloped "park like" area that must include about 15-20 acres of land with lots of mature trees including oaks and evergreen. We have watched many deer wander through this area as well as right through his back yard while visiting them.

Last fall we got to watch a beautiful 12pt and a large 8pt lock up with each other while following a small group of Doe through the "park area" for about 15-20 minutes.  :happy1:

has anyone tried putting out a 5 gal. pail with deer feed in the bottom to help the bucks push their own antlers off where you can find them easier?

I dont think a deer will stick his head in a pale to eat? i have left pales with oats in them ar bear bait stations and have had deer just knock them over and eat.. never any pics of them with there head in it. but yah never know they might..

Taking off shortly with my son to check out the MN Deer and Turkey Expo that is going on in Owatonna this weekend at the Fairgrounds. Hopefully he will be engrossed enough to last a couple of hours and then we are gonna head out to a couple spots around the edge of town where

I have seen several nice bucks the past couple weeks that have not dropped their racks yet. I can't believe how many bucks I have seen around the Owatonna and Rochester areas over the past couple of weeks that still have their racks.  :reporter;

Well we spent a couple hours at the Deer and Turkey Expo, found out my son is a natural with a compound bow and then spent a couple hours out in the woods looking for antler sheds.

We followed several heavy trails along the river, down into some bedding areas and up through some high lands but no sheds were to be found. We did scare up a red fox that was hanging out inside a downed tree trunk, my boy thought that was pretty cool and he said he would love to go out again and check out the areas that we didn't get to yesterday.  :happy1:

Sounds like you had a banner day.   :happy1:  If you want to get that boy shooting archery like a pro, take him to MN Archery in Litchfield.

Well not to hijack the thread so be sure to get out in the next few weeks as the snow melts and you may have more luck.  Many deer still haven't dropped their antlers yet.

I took my 10 year old daughter out shed hunting yesterday, no sheds found, but we did get to see several grouse, turkey, deer, squirrel, and a rabbit.  I was able to help her identify fox, coyote, deer, grouse, turkey, squirrel, and rabbit tracks in the snow.  We also identified coyote beds along a ridge, deer beds, deer rubs, squirrel nests, and found a large Burr Oak that turkeys were roosting in on a regular basis.  To start she couldn't idendtify anything, but by the end she was getting it right every track we saw which was pretty cool.   :happy1:
