Under Utilized

Well they used to call them roughfish now it's under utilized fish. Since the wording states that they aren't being used enough. Why do they not let a person spear them when they are in the shallows spawning. It just don't make sense to me.

A person still wouldn't be able to take any more than they could use, as that's wanton waste. If they would allow it I think more would take them for smoking or pickling or other reasons. It wouldn't hurt the populations any.

Griz, Which ruff fish are you talking about?
Is it all ruff fish or just a certain species?

The rough fish listed in the fishing regs. Carp, suckers, etc. Well now they ain't called rough fish it's under utilized fish.

The wording was changed because it was hurtful to those fishes feelings calling them rough. It is good to see that fish are now recieving politically correct nicknames.

well changing the name is ok because i dont know how many people said rough fish and i dont know how many people are going to say under utilzed same difference i call them garbage (carp bullheads dogfish) nothing makes me more  then to catch a bullhead on opener walleye and not catch anything else.

OK yea it's just a name change but that's what got me thinking of my point. They are under utilized. Why then do they put restrictions on them when people can actually get them. People would use them more if they were allowed to go after them in some reasonable manner.

Now this is just me but a reasonable manner in which you could get them would be any way you can. I just don't get it they say they are under utilized but then limit how you can get them when they are easiest to get. Some will never use them at all but for those that would, should be allowed better ways to harvest them.

Hmmm got me thinking now Grizz and man that hurts. Just trying to think the way they may be thinking. If we start telling people the fish is under utililized more people will start taking them. Just like telling people there are to meny does so they will start shooting more. Good luck convincing most people that suckers, cat fish, carp and bullheads are good eating if peoperly taken care of. Why wont they let us take them earlier when they are in the sallows, maybe because they feel there are still to meny game fish in the sallows nesting to. What they see is the underused fish traper, netter or spearer out deciding to keep the eye, pike or what ever they happen to get.  On the other hand under used to me could mean eye, musky and others because I seldom fish for them.lol  Now if they can get enough pople to keep these under used fish they will have reason to put a season and limit on them and raise the lic. again.

All, I can say is......I had an old aunt that lived in Wadena, her and her husband used to go down to the river there and catch red horse suckers. They would smoke um up and make a thing called "sucker spread". They would spread it on bread, and if you didn't know better, you would think that you was eating tuna fish. Man that was, (as Alton Brown would say) "GOOD EATS!"

Just my 2 pennies..........

Anyways, you make a good point, they should make it easier to get them if they feel they are under used.

But, on the other hand, don't some DNR bioligist believe that they help balance out a lake?
(if not in mass numbers)
And if you take a balance out, would a lake get over run with a prolific species such as small sunnies or tons of small perch?

I love suckers smoked, and man I really like smoked bullheads. i dont fish much anymore so I under utilize them as well. I used to spear suckers all the time in Bemidji at the power dam and used my bow for them off an old railroad bridge up there. My dad and I used to fish bullheads as soon as the ice was far enough off shore to cast which was a blast except for the fact that the spin coming in and after awhile makes a mess out of your line.
As Hunterdown said, if made right it is good eats.

P.S. Hunterdown, sorry but it is Alton Brown not Eldon Brown. But you have good taste in cooking shows.

Lat time we went up the LOW I kept a whitefish we caught and filleted it just to try it.  Everyone had a piece of it and everyone thought it was good.  I saw them do this on In Fisherman.  Try it.

I don't think one should worry about too many people going after them. The pike and eyes are gone by the time suckers and carp start moving. I'm sure you are pretty close now that I think about it.

I'm guessing they are more worried about someone hitting the eye or pike run and claiming to be after the others. They would know they are poaching but would have to catch them actually spearing an eye or a pike to nail them. Just easier to enforce by not allowing any.
