How many of you can tell how old a deer is by their teeth to antlers?

well that is a good question.

I would say Body size is a better indacator.( for my area and for me). if you see a true mature buck it will stand out like a Pink elaphant.. Most hunters have never seen a true mature buck...

I think the ony accurate way to tell the age is the tooth.

There are a number of things that come into play that determine Antler growth.  And it really isn't possible to age a deer by the Antlers.

Examination of the teeth is pretty much the only way to determine age without lab tests.  I shot a buck a number of years ago that was so old the majority of his teeth were almost worn away, he sported a rather small rack, 6 if I recall correctly.

its nearly impossible to tell how old a buck is by his antlers, body size is a good way color of the hair around his head and nose and under his neck, but the best and most accurate way to age a deer is his teeth. i experienced the same thing C.C. Walters experienced i shot a small basket racked 6 (first buck) he had a big body dressed out at 200 lbs but we aged him at about 5 years old, and that is a mature buck and if i can help it i try to shoot those and get them out of my  herd.

You guy's are correct, the only real way to determine the age of the deer is by it's teeth.

(or if you cut the antler off and count the rings) (I'm kidding of course)   :rotflmao:

not after they reach 2 years old because after that antler growth can either sky rocket and he could be a huge deer a 3 some before that it all depends on how well you know the deer in your area but otherwise i would say no you cant tell

Growth depends on nutrition and heredity. Antlers can also be found on female deer. Normally the doe has spikes that remain in velvet. The spiked doe remains fertile and can produce young. This occurs in one to every 20 thousand deer.
