I've used down riggers before, just never heard them called driver rods before.

Are you sure?

I think you may be referring to a diver rod or downrigger rod.

For Golf?  LOL, are you referring to a "Dipsey Diver" rod?  If so--yes.  If not, good question.

It must be a "dipsey" rod if the conversation was revolving around the big lake.  The dipsy diver is AKA the poor mans downrigger and a special extra heavy rod is needed to effectively fish a "diver" because of the pull it generates when taking your lure down to depths of up to 70 ft.  A decent diver rod will cost about $40 to get you started.  stick with mono (although the divers will go deeper easier with super lines.  HOwever, the divers generally come with depth charts revolving arounf mono lines.  14-17 lb mon if fine, some use heavier.  You will need a good Trolling reel with a counter since dipseys are libe sensitive--like a crankbait.  I recommend a Diawa Sealine series reel 27/47H models hold large amounts of line and the drags are awesome.   Maybe use a 47h on the dipsey though.--more line to have around.
