My son's 1st Black Bear

My son Calvin (age 14) got his 1st bear on the Sept 1st opener here in MN.  It was a nice 200 lb young boer.  It came in around 5:30pm.

We also had some nice photos on the trail cam of a big boer coming in only at night.

Hunter

We use a lot of different items for bait.  Usually our staples are Milk stage field corn, sweet apples, and a sweet molasses feed mix from the mill(usually either horse or calf starter).  We then add a sweet enticer in small amounts on a daily basis during the hunt to keep them checking in often.  These can be marshmellows, honey, syrup, pastries, cookies, etc.  I usually use very little of this as it can be expensive and they really don't care to eat that much of it anyway.  Some baits they will eat hundreds of pounds of sweet feed over the course of the season so we get it bulk bagged for around 5.00 for 50 lbs to save money.  We also get cooking grease and pour it around the bait, but not so much as bait, but to show where the bears travel when they leave.  Over a couple of weeks they will leave black grease trails leaving the bait sight and of course leave the scent everywhere they walk.

This bait had several bears visiting besides the two pictured including a sow with three cubs.

I am planning on getting him a half body mount done.

Calvin... congrats, were you all pumped up and got the knees a knocken,heart pounding, shakes...... I sure hope so its a great feeling, I just returned home from MN and shot a good bear and I still get the bear fever, Have a great hunting season !!!!!
