Pheasant opener.

  Well how did you all do on the pheasant opener? We had no luck. 10 people, 5 hounds, lots of walking, but no one even fired a shot. It was very wet where we hunted and LOTS OF CORN. Couldn't walk in the corn either. It was in an area that had a very bad windstorm earlier this summer and the corn is laying every direction you could imagine. The one bright spot was my new pup hunted well after the first walk and every one had a chance to get to know each other (the hounds that is). Had a couple nice points for me. We also kicked up some birds that could barely fly. Very late hatch. No tail feathers, definitely no color and they could only fly about 30 yards after getting up. My old dog would have caught every one of them in his prime.
   Either way it was fun, but a couple birds would have made it even better!!!!!

Sorry you guys didn't score but at least you got a good workout for your dog.  It's still early in the season.  When the corn comes down, that should help a lot.  How much more do you think you guys will get out?

I got invited to hunt with a friend later this month.  this is the first time in years that we got invited.  Me and the boys are pretty excited because we don't have a spot to go to and don't get out as much as we'd like to.

Thats too bad Auggie, at least you got out and enjoyed the day with friends and the dogs got some early season work in.

I got out for 2 hours yesterday, we did get our birds but everything was wet and thick still. I'll be heading down to Marshall in a couple weeks. In the mean time, i'll be hitting the local honey hole a few times.

Gotta love this time of year..... Pheasant hunting, deer hunting and fall fishing.

we had a real interesting opening morning,at 9:02 it started raining along with thunder and even a little lightning.but the bright side was the pup figured out what we were looking for and we got our birds before noon but it was a wet hard hunt,we had a new guy on the crew and tried to get him to walk around holding his gun up in the air to protect the rest of us from the lightning but he wouldnt bite.good luck to everyone with their pheasants

Sorry you guys didn't score but at least you got a good workout for your dog.  It's still early in the season.  When the corn comes down, that should help a lot.  How much more do you think you guys will get out?

I got invited to hunt with a friend later this month.  this is the first time in years that we got invited.  Me and the boys are pretty excited because we don't have a spot to go to and don't get out as much as we'd like to. 

I will get out plenty. Opener is the only time we get a big bunch together like that and it is more about the people than the birds anyway. I like to hunt later in the season alot when the pressure is less. I really like the fact they extended the season past mid Dec. as the holiday hunting is great. Gives a guy a chance to work off some of that Christmas feast!!!!

got out a bit and only one rooster, tons of hens but thats it. went to check out the public land and it was way to crowded, surprised no one got hurt. but one bird is pretty good i guess, it was just me and a buddy with our 2 dogs

Me and a friend went out last night.
Only saw 2 roosters, my friend missed his shot.
I hit mine, but not well. It came down in the corn and the dog couldn't find it.
I think it hit the ground running.

went out scouting tonight and we saw 15 roosters tonight and took a shot at one but I blew and missed boy oh boy did I get harrased by the wife.  Going back out tomorrow and checking out another area in the morning will post tomorrow on how it was.

 :queen:I'm pheasantman2121 wife. We went hunting opener weekend and I shot my first pheasant with ONLY A 20 GA. Wow was my adreneline rushing. Probally the most exciting time of my life other than family stuff!!!!!!!  I can't wait to go again in the morning to get my second one or even more cuz the hubby can't hit anything he misses everytime.  I'm sure he is going to be embarrassed after reading this!!  If there is any men trying to get there wife to go hunting Take them with and let them walk with you I bet after the first time they will soon to ask to buy their own gun!!!! Then they will beg to go hunting!!! It's a great bonding experience with my husband especially with children at home.!!! Well thanks for the comment pat have a great night!

   Congrats!! Im not sure who Im happier for.   Huntinchick for having a great hunt or pheasantman2121 for having a wife who loves to hunt with him.  I think I'll give it to the 2 of you as a pair. You've found someone and something to share for life.

We hunted south central north dakota... Oakes area... They have had 7-9 inches of rain over the last few weeks... all of the corn is still in the fields... it made for a miseable trip.  We hunted PRIME land, which we have hunted for the past 10 years.. this by far was the worst opener we have had.  6 guys, one rooster in 3 days.  Dogs got a good work out as did we!  Until the corn is down, it really makes no sense to hunt.  Pheasants all over in the bean fields as well. But, In No Dak you cant hunt unharvested fields!

I did not do well.  It seems there were many more hunters out this year than last, and I got to a WMA at 8:30, but it was occupied.  So I went somewhere else.  But the corn was still up, and the roosters must have left. 

Since opener, I should have had 6 roosters over four hunting days, but missed or didn't shoot for some reason.  (It was windy, or the sun was in the eye making identificaiton come too late).

As usual, I've flushed more hens than roosters.

Though yesterday I popped up 14 roosters on a large field.  But I must have been making too much noise, as they popped up 100+ yards away.  Then sunset.

Oh well.

Went on on sat and hunted from 9-11:30 and saw a bunch of birds. We got one younger rooster and winged two others. I missed two other roosters. I think my wife took the bb's out of my shells the night before. I'd say we saw 7-9 roosters and 10-15 hens. just wish i could hit the darn things

You're right about the crops. Still standing strong down here. I'll try to remember and throw a heads up out there when they start harvesting the corn.

I've hunted SW of Marshall the last two weekends and done well.  Like everyone else has noted, most of the corn is still in.  I confined my hunts to the first and last hour of the day and hunted CRP along the corn.  This last Saturday we jumped about 30 birds between two fields with most being hens.  It should be great once the crops get out of the field.

Pheasant hunting has been great.  Out the last few evenings.  shooting birds, watching the dog, then a couple .  PRICELESS
