The True Talker will make some of the best sounds possible.  Everything from a monster buck to a bleeting fawn.  I have had one problem with it -- it has frozen up on me during VERY cold days.  Just the moisture from my breath was enough to freeze the reed.  So I would keep it inside my coat but then it's a lot of movement to get it out and use it.  I'll use it during mild weather but not below 15 degrees which is most every firearms seasons.

I have another one which I can't think of the name.  I got it at the deer classic.  It's an "inhale" style.  That way, my breath (moisture) never enters the tube and it never freeses up.  It is only a buck call with very little variation.

For scents, I've had good results with Trails end
and also the Wild Life Research estrus scented wafers/leaves --->  :puke:

jnyman,
Where/when you hunt, hunting pressure from other hunters may factor into calls and scents.  It never hurts to put out some type of scent just in case it attracks and stops a buck that may have kept going.  However, scents, rattles, and calls work best when the deer are in a natural movement pattern.  Not as effective when being run around by multiple hunters.
Good luck on the Buck Quest.

Definately a good point DE. I've had the best luck using calls/scents mainly when they are naturally walking through an area. My biggest downfall when I first started was "blind calling". I swear I educated more deer to circle downwind on me than I actually saw due to my persistant doe bleats/grunts/and rattling before I figured out it's best to do when you actually see a deer.

Good luck jnyman!
Marry an outdoors woman. Then if you throw her out into the yard on a cold night, she can still survive.
