Hey there, I ended up in a pinch on a trip that I am taking this weekend and need to go out and buy myself a used (hopefully) rifle. I have never been rifle hunting (shotgun hunter) but I got the offer to go on a little trip with a buddy.

I know that I am looking for a .30-06, but does anyone have advice or suggestions for a good gun for a good price??  The same idea as a Remington 870 but for a rifle, as far as it being a great tool that wont fail, good performer with no frills?

any help is appreciated!!

A great gun for you if you are used to hunting with an 870 is a remington 760 or 7600 in 30-06 or .308.  They are pump action rifles and they are pretty accurate.  They are more reliable than autos.  Everyone in our hunting party uses a 7600 or 760 in .30-06, and one of my cousins has one in .270.  Great gun and very popular where I hunt in Wisconsin.  I bought mine used for $275 but mine is really old. I think you could pick up a nice used one for under $500. They are like $780 new though.  Or just get a rifled barrel with a canteleaver (spelling?) scope mount and scope for your shotgun if you dont already have one.  I have shot deer at 120 yards with my 870, using this set up with Breneke K.O. slugs.
-Good luck-

something similar to this http://rrarms.com/catalog.php?prod=GSB2306 wouldn't be bad, or the Rossi that I have seen pretty often at my local Gander.  Even new they're under $200, just a single shot, but with a good scope and some practice, all you need is one shot.

this late in the game you should stick with the gun you know. and pick up a rifle next year. a shotgun even in wisconsin or where ever isn't going to reduce the amount of shooting you'll have. better to be with a gun you know and are confident with.

If your interested give me a call. I really like this rifle. I've had it since I was 13. Fast to the shoulder, easy to aim, and oh so smooth! I used it last weekend and harvested a nice doe with it. Its sighted in and ready to go! Nate-320-630-2909
