OMG, your killing me..I live on 150 acers. I own. I have raised plenty of meat..10 head of beef standing right now. Most of the time, I'm forced to ship them instead of butchering them because I can't afford to eat them ourselves.

I have raised plenty of hogs. Ya I have given them plenty of scraps but if you want to raise them with good meat quality and not 6 inches of fat on them. A person will use a quality 16% hog grower & finisher. Skimping on feed and using scraps can be cheap. That may be the only advantage

Here is a beef that succumbed to a single 350 grain Hornady from a 500 S&W

Trust me, I farm and this meat was anything but cheap!!!

How many pounds do you have hanging right there? I never said beef was cheap. Just cheaper than venison per pound. Figure it out. It is pretty simple math really. If you raise your own beef and can't afford to eat it, that is a management/marketing problem.
As for the pig, a good mix of scraps, fruits and vegetables along with a couple lbs of (your exactly right a 16% grower) a day will finish out one of the most tasty pigs around. Now if I bought it by the bag in 50lb sacks, $36 would feed him for about 150 days. Instead I buy the feed in bulk and feed him more of it for less money. The pigs now days are bred to be long and lean, no 6 inches of fat. But why am I telling you? You already know this.

We will just respectfully disagree on beef & pork being cheaper by the pound than Venison

Now I'm not a farmer, nor do I have 150+ acres of excellent deer hunting land, but I am pretty good with numbers. When I first tried to calculate how much I spent harvesting a deer this year VS. how much I would have spent on that same amount of beef and sausage (I mixed gound venison with ground pork for brats) I thought I was a little bit ahead. But I did forget what Auggie stated to be the most important. Time. I discounted the previous unsuccessful weekends. With those acounted for I was a great deal behind. Now I'm not complaining because I my family isn't hurting as bad as some. I do find it convenient that I don't have to buy beef for the time being, although I paid a good amount more my venison. If money and time were a problem it would be more efficient for me to buy beef.

On the topic - I'd really hate to see deer hunting become a rich man's sport!

gonna have to go with both sides on this one like I said now that I have all my gear I can go for just my tags how ever in years past when I had to buy this and that I was on the other side of it. As far as fuel I don't have to spend a dime if I don't want to as I can hunt at home, and as for my time I don't realy count that either because it is a passion of mine.

Agreed. I just did the calculations to see the numbers. If I had to be working 7 days a week to support my family than working the days I would hunt and just buying beef at the local grocery store would be the most efficient. Like I said my family is fortunate enough that I can just chalk up hunting in the hobby/ passion collumn; and still have the all the benifits of venison in the freezer -  ;)
