What kind plans do you outdoors people have for opener?
Do you have a cabin that you go to?
Do you have a special place that you and your friends hit? (don't have to give out details)
Do you have traditions that you do?
Do you skip the crowds, and do something else?

I, myself, take the week off and chase turkeys, but do take my kids down to the river and fish for walleyes. It's a great time to bond with them! Because we spend the whole week together hunting and fishing. Yea, it's kind of a tradition that my kids really enjoy....

Spending time with the old man, enjoying the great outdoors!

So? What do you do?

because i live here on mille lacs, i will most likely fish here. my wife has talked about going camping somewhere, that is a option also, you have to keep her happy when you fish as much as i do. opener isn't a very big deal for me anymore, the monday after the opener is, that is the mpls firemens 2 day fishing tounament at hunters point resort on lake mille lacs. my fishing partner took first place last year and i took 4th. i would have took 2nd or 3rd had i weighed 3 fish the first day instead of only 2. i had the fish to weigh, i just thought that the way they were biting the first day the second day would be a sinch..........well i only caught 1 weigh fish the second day and only weighed 3 fish of a possable 4 fish limit over the 2 day tournament. lessons were learned last year, so maybe we can go 1,2 this year....................tom fellegy

a few years ago I used to go up to eagles nest lake #1 and 2 near Bear Head state park. In 2006 the weather was bad all 4 days up there so we sat at the casino playing bingo! lol

Opening Day is one adventure that I won't miss attending as I sit on the side lines while the zoo-orama  :titanic: lines up at the boat ramps. It's a long season for me with plenty of other opportunities to love thy neighbor. :doah:

I'll be home working on my boat getting ready to get ready. :fishing:

Can't remember the last time I fished on opener. I to will wait till the following Monday or Tuesday and then go to one of my little out of the way lakes and see if I can get in on some bass and crappie action, If the sun is out I'll go chase some northerns. First time out is more of a shake down cruise to remind me of what I didn't fix last fall. Might have a new rod that needs some breaking in  :whistling:

Ahhh.... Fishing Opener. A good weekend to fish? Not too sure about that, but a good weekend to celebrate? Yes it is! I don't invest too much time fishing on the opener but no way in heck will I miss out. That would be like not going to my birthday party because there are just too many people. Its a celebration, a celebration of fishing. I wouldnt miss it for anything. Had a few close calls in the past few years with work schedules but never miss it!  :happybday:

It has been becoming of tradition that my brother, uncle and myself head up to BWCAW the third weekend in may. Not exactly opener but probably will be for me.

Anniversary? :doah:.....How did you let that happen?

I've been going to Mille Lacs for opener since I can remember. The last few years have brought a lot of changes and 2008 was the first time I took off work to go during the 1st week of opener. It felt kind of strange being out there with only a handful of boats. It almost didn't feel like opener. I'm not sure what is going to happen this year.

I usually hit the WI opener on the Croix. This year, I'll miss out on it for the first time in a long time due to taking my captain's class. I'm sure I'll be either on the Croix or Sippi during the MN opener. That's where 90% of my fishing time is spent during open water.

I will prolly hit one of my favorite lakes. Don't know where but do know it will not have a public access or any cabins on it.

There is a small lake about a quarter mile away that holds some nice northerns. It also has some real nice sunnies and crappies to keep me busy until the opener.

Weather permitting, I will spend opener with my son and my dad.  My folks have a place on a chain of lakes in north central Minnesota.  (Since no one is naming Lake names) It's been a tradition since I can remember.  If the eyes aren't biting the crappies usually do and that's always fun!

No secret lake on my agenda, Red Lake or LOW.  I'm going to watch the weather and see what the wind is predicted to do.  Motorhome and boat will be hooked up and decision will be made Friday afternoon.

I can't say because the warden will be watching then he knows that I use powerful stick baits on the opener to get my limit in under 30seconds!! ( boom!!!)

Seriously though the lake I am planning to open on is a small lake with lots and I mean lots of walleyes in it. So yes at the risk of having the little lake over run I will not say the name of it.

However if it ever quits snowing and getting below freezing I could get alot more excited about the opener. Good luck to all and may your motors always work and the fish bite on your hook for you!!

me and my father made it a tradition to go to our cabin every year (with uncles and cousions) and go out right at midnight...only 33 day 14 hours and 11 minutes to go!!

its on a small lake up north (not tell which) and we always nail the big eyes, its hard for us to get anything smaller then 22, so we usually end up coming home with 3 or 4 only but it still fun.

plus there is only 3 boats on the water and all three are from our cabin, it nice having a lake that no one knows about.

ill post pics on the following monday of our biggest catches  :fishing2:  :happy1:

I never actually get to fish opener since I own/run a bait shop, but tuesdays are my day off.  It's become tradition for me to take my dad out the first tuesday and go trout fishing on a small lake not to far from Frazee.  We never have alot of luck early in the season, but its fun to get out.

I'm looking forward to Bass opener this year....have really starting trying to fish them in the last couple years.  If this snow ever melts and I actually get my boat home I might actually get more excited....we'll see if open water ever arrives  ;D

Well the reason I didn't put a name up is they don't have names. I'll tell ya what they are called though. Bosue slough, tvedts pond, woolwagge lake, the hole or the peanut pond. Is prolly one of em I'm going to. I might decide to go to another one but it still won't have a name. As a joke if anyone asks where I got the fish I tell them lake #3. Locals know where I got them by what I got but they still can't get there from there w/o a plane w/floats.

Griz, I always find it humorous when people don't name the lakes they are going to.  Even when it's big lakes like Mille Lacs, Leech, Winnie or Lake of the Woods.  I understand why most don't name where they are going, but I still find it funny.

What's even more funny is how many people fish Lake X!  Must be a huge lake!  ;D
