The real black ones are females, They get that color when they are in there full spawning mode,
after that they turn to there normal color. That's what i been told anyhow

On a small lake here in West Central Mn.  It isn't the biggest one I've ever caught, but definently a keeper.  I didn't have a tape along with to measure it, so I laid it next to the the access cover on the floor of the boat in reference.  (I can go measure the cover if you like)  ;)



It went well with country fried potatoes and creamed peas.  ;D And washed down with a nice cold glass of milk.   ;D

From what i've heard... Male crappies turn black once they have completed digging the spawning nest and its actually bruised from moving rocks and sand. Whereas the female remains the natural color from watching.

Here is one I got back in 06. I seemed to have lost pics taken on the lake when I got a new fuser. It was measure at the taxi guys at 17 1/8" frozen and waved with the yard stick.

Nice fish! allways nice to catch a mess of them. I dont have any pictures but a friend of mine and his 10 year old son caught a nise bunch of 9to 13 in crappies in 12 feet of water. good fight.  :fishing: :fishing:
